Sketchbook Thread of Wiikate

#1

Arrh… I finally did this thread. Here’s first image, from the head anatomy lessons.

I’ll upload more images here, now when I got this started.

Hi Markku - nice to see you join it the fun  good start - looks a tad flat - try working on more contrast and perhaps basic shapes/volumes  sheesh I really should shut up on that one :scream: Keep it up:thumbsup:

Hello and welcome!!

Love the subtle shades. I find the head studies a good exercise to learn values. A good way is to imagine these heads as 3D shapes and imagine what the side that you cannot see would look like, then look at what you have to work with.

yeah, I actually thought that painting heads will help me to learn about shading and volume. Also new viewing angles.

When I’ve painted a head that looks almost ok, it’s hard to do strong highlights / shadows. I just do it “mildly”

And that head isn’t anatomically correct, but main thing is shading practise.

Great to have good advices so fast

Here are images from my school project that I finished a month ago…

more from my school project

and that’s it.

Another head. I’m not happy with it. Doesn’t look like the reference I used. Used too much time, and finally all changes were just worse.

the ear looks a bit small, but nonetheless a damn nice sketch Wiikate

Great stuff here!

The last head looks off because the proportions are off.
Try to get those right before gettting into adding detail too much.

Check your school work chars where the heads have the correct proportions…
Compare the distance between browline and chin with the distance between browline and top of cranium (crown? can’t remember)…

Basically the face is too long… would be great to see you giving another go at this head. It would be much better than the first version I’m sure!

yeah, I tried to get the angle right, but didn’t get it. And also tried to make it look like the reference head, that didn’t come right either.

But here is Mrs Bouchet (073 from the head references)

I guess I’m learning something about shading here. Proportions are still little off.
