Sketchbook Thread of Talaria

I had a similar idea for the OFDW. Some giant getting out of the ground. Only I thought of doing him geting out of the wall and being a bit monsterish :bounce: I like the view you’ve chosen for him. The tree on his hand gives a great hint of the scale. I know this is just an early sketch, but be sure to make more hints like that. Little people on the ground and so on.

Great start on the Correggio study too.

Looking forward to see this progressing

NR43, you’re right I should make my giant more …meaty

Sir Mu, it is from my imagination, but drawing the Hemes of Correggio really helped me with the torso and the legs

-voraz-, Thank you!

razz, thank you, I was planning on doing more little trees on top of him, but I don’t think I’ll draw little people in it

A little update in the giant I made him more meaty.

I haven’t done anything else because I have been …lazy ( D: )

#23

By saying some little people I meant everything that would define the scale better. Trees are good  Geting nicer. But be careful with those very dark lines, I don’t think you want that. it doesn’t matter now much, because you’re going to paint it (you are going to paint it, right?), but when drawing, if you do a darker line, you will get the viewers attention to that place. So by doing such a dark line you’re almost saying “look, I’ve made a mistake here”. I’m not saying that dark lines are evil, it’s just a thingie where to put them

Good luck with your peace

#24

Well you’re right on the lines. I wasn’t thinking of coloring him  since I’m just not good with digital painting…but I could try, In fact I really need to practice…so I guess I’m coloring him now

I fixed the lines:

hmm  this scanner is weird…

Oh well, I’m planning on making a waterfall there too, It will be like the water fell on the giant so he woke up.

Talaria,

You have some lovely sketches, I was curious to know if you have applied to school yet, or have submitted a portfolio - one thing at least here is that schools tend not to like to see digital work in a Portfolio, only Traditional, so hopefully you have or will inquire about your school’s requirements for admission.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Cheers,

I haven’t applied yet. I’m in the process of moving to another place, so I will apply when I’m moved  . oh I didn’t know about the digital art in the portfolio, well that wouldnt be a problem for me since I don’t have many digital art.

Update on my giant for the workshop:

I said i was going to paint him digital but not anymore, I don’t think I could finish it in a week

#27

Hey Talaria,

I should have listnened to your advise concerning proportions for my OFDW entry… I apologize for that
I’m reworking every character again now.

Your entry is coming along nicely I see. i was wondering what you’ll do with it’s fingers? Especially the left hand looks a bit awkwardmaybe you could even make them longer so they look like tree roots or something… just a suggestion. This is already a wonderful piece as it is now really

Good luck with moving and all!

#28

Looking really great with the environment added! Good choice to color it. The image will look much more alive with the colors, only choose them carefully. And how are you planning to do it? Paint on top of the drawing or just use it as a guideline?

#29

Hi Talaria,
Thanks for stopping by my thread.
Good studies of the old masters. I also like the drawing of the giant. Keep working on the anatomy - the inside of the left elbow looks a bit off.
I’d like to see how this turns out!

#30

NR43, O: no need to apologize for that. I didn’t understood what you were telling about depths and values so I was looking forward to your next step on your work to see how it will turn out. It’s good that you’re reworking on them, I saw your last post, the guy looks very good
Hmmm about the fingers I was planning on making them on top of rocks, you’re right they do look weird.

Razz, hehe you misunderstood, I’m not planning on coloring him, I like it as it is black and white :). I would color it but i don’t have time D:

Battle812, no problem :). thanks. thanks for pointing it out, I think its the shading, I’m going to work on that too.

A little update on hermes by Correggio
I worked a bit more on the face.

#31

Talaria, thanks for checking out my thread. I need all the encouragement I can get.

I really like your giant. It reminds me of renaissance paintings by the masters - so full of motion I can almost see him move!

I look forward to seeing more of your work, keep it up.

#32

Whoops, sorry for misunderstanding you. Now then, be sure to do a good job with that pencil!!

I think something is wrong with hermes’ lips.

#33

Heozart, No problem , thank you for your words

Razz, hmm… D: this is hard! could you be more specific?

Here is my giant progress,

Does it look too dark? I have a old monitor  also when I scanned him in Photoshop it looked brighter…

#34

Hi Talaria,

I made this exact same post to the OFDW 019 thread, but hope you don’t mind if I post it here as well.

Hope this little paintover helps - bear in mind, these are only suggestions. :) The main thing I would recommend is just elongating the legs and also just giving the torso a more overall sense of flow by lengthening the lines of the side that stretches, and contracting / pinching the lines of the side that is being compressed:

I also really recommend looking at Greek / Roman sculpture, for example the Laocoon Group, for examples of figures that exhibit twisting:

For everything we do, there is a precedent. :)

Hi Talaria,

I like your stuff very much, I am looking forward to your final giant

Keep up posting new stuff

#36

Trunks, Thank you, I’m glad that you liked my drawings

Rebbeccak, thank you a lot for the help  I really appreciate it.

Well here is the finished version of my only-pencils-underground giant :stuck_out_tongue:

#37

It looks awesome! The right background kind of blends in with his arm. Also the roots could be rougher to set them apart from the body.

#38

Hi…Talaria…:applause:

You ended up with a REALLY FINE drawing…has that old master look about it …GREAT…:bounce:

I wouldn’t mind seeing the outside curve of his neck…left side of drawing…needs to have a nice rounded outward curve leading into the skull, simalar to the neck line of the sculpture that
Rebecca posted above.
Also, the forarm…right side of drawing, is a little small in diamiter, compared the the one on the left side of drawing…needs the muscle tendon on upper side of forarm,…that conectes and ties the foram into the upper arm…makes a nice kind of curve that connectes the two. Put your palm faceing down, tighten up muscles in your arm, and you will see that tendon muscle in action… …this muscle tendon will give the foram the proper diamiter…also the wrist on that arm…right side of drawing, can stand to be a little thicker…just minor stuff,…but will make a big difference in the look of … YOUR… drawing

GREAT JOB on this drawing…was a real pleasure to see it develope…looking forward to seeing your next piece…

TAKE CARE
Glenn

So true
Wonderful work Talaria
You’re a true inspiration to the less experienced among us :D.

See you at the torso challenge!

#40

Womball, thanks, and thank you for the critique  But I don’t think I’ll be touching this piece anymore :/…

SpiritDreamer, Thank you  Now that you mention it , it does have a lot of little mistakes  …oh well thank you for your support

NR43, thanks :D. I’ll see you there then

I started University this monday so I don’t have as much time to draw as I had in vacations, but well I’ll find the time :). Also my godfather gave a new monitor (yaay) everything looks more bright, now the hermes copy doesn’t look as good as it used to X_X .

Well here is another sketch, it’s Apolo
