Sketchbook Thread of sunspotter

Hi,

I am a science student, but art is my hobby and I would like to get better at figure drawing. My primary sources of education are Vilppu’s Drawing Manual and several books by George Bridgman. As I have no formal art education, comments are very useful! If I am going in the wrong direction, please point that out! As a consequence, I will try to adapt and make it better.

Hey there

These look like great studies to me! I like how you’ve started to add some shading to the most recent sketches, with hatching following the forms and all. You’ve got a really nice sketchbook started…keep it up!

Thanks for your encouraging words, jabuhrer!

Here’s some more

Well, you’re on the right path to learn the human figure. Simple stuff first. I’d fit in a few longer drawings just to see how well you’re progressing forward and how these faster studies help you understand anatomy better. And because it’s something I’ve been suggested to do quite some time ago

Excellent start. I wish I had taken this level of care at the beginning, as you have. I definately look forward to seeing your progress! Honestly, I dont have anything useful to add to this thread. So, keep up the good work!

Definitely going in the right direction.

Since you are starting out strongly, I would suggest you begin from day one to also endeavour to get more accurate observed proportions.

It will be a harder habit to break later, as I found to my own detriment.

And… Welcome!

Thanks vicent, I have read a text on the 7.5head/8head rule. I hope it will help me improve proportions.

I like the way Hogarth over-stresses masses and gives them 3D impression.

Hi Sunspotter
Some nice studies going on in your thread…

You might want to tackle an Old Master study at this point…Maybe a Rubens…It will give you a deeper feeling for the rhythms created by oppossing curves in the forms of the figures…
Take care, and keep up the steady and nice progress…

Inspiring. I can feel the movement and “real” people in those. I think you should just continue to constantly practice poses, proportions and like the masters sketch sketch sketch…good luck! i’ll be visiting here and might even use your sketches to practice myself.

Hey, this time all of the drawings (except when indicated) are no ref’s, I drew the poses myself! I’m finally learning to create my own poses, I’m really happy!
