Sketchbook Thread of Sirron

2 hrs 30 mins to finish the 1st head. Now on to the 2nd.

To openCanvas 1.1 users:
You might already know about the network capability of oC. But finding people to get together is hard. Then check out Project warPaint! A place where other artists can host or easily find a server to join. Just download the application to see the list and click to join. Starting a server might be a bit trickier, but there’s a FAQ to answer questions.

There’s not really enough people so I’m advertising in hopes of getting more.

The openCanvas program is included with the warPaint app or you can get it here.

EDIT: Project warPaint is closed now :frowning:

SirRon,

Really liking the sensibility of the first rendered head. Looking forward to seeing how the second turns out.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#24

Ok, here’s the second!

(Quicktime 7)

Lost track of time but I think I got through it faster than the first. I know it’s not about speed, but if I can get the same quality at a faster time then that’s now I can feel I’m understanding it better.

I’m probably going to be slowing down on these heads, I’ve been neglecting some other projects I’m working on. But I’ll keep them coming time and motivation permits.

SirRon,

The 50 Portraits Thread will remain open, so you are welcome to post there as you can ~ having said that, I would still try to do as many as you can while retaining quality in the given time frame.

The second head is a bit less convincing than the first, which has a lot of strong presence ~ would love to see you add a few more passes to the rendering of the second so that the two portraits form a strong pair.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#26

Less convincing than the first? Hmm, how so? I’d like to continue a bit on this that head too but I don’t know what you mean by strong presence.

Here’s what I’m working on now for a personal project.
Warhammer 40k Imperial Guard WIP

#27

That was great - seeing the Quicktime recording!

#28

SirRon,

Hey there, I’ll try to explain what I meant in a bit ~ nice to see your new concept. If you wish, I am happy to try a paintover to make suggestions, but generally I don’t unless the artist grants permission. Looking forward to your updates!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

YMS:
Glad you liked it!

Rebecca: (you don’t mind if I call you becca though right? )
Oh please do! I had a feeling I should’ve mentioned I’m open to critiques and paintovers.

#30

Hmm… I thought I posted the completed one.

I should’ve cropped out the left side more, or put something there. Not happy with that empty space. Other than that I’d say it’s an improvement in my digital painting skills. Partly thanks to the head studies

#31

really nice thread - especially the head paintings  keep it coming :bounce:

#32

Thanks Intervain!

Been working on a dog warrior character for the blizzard art contest… been feeling pretty discouraged though. It’s funny though that I thought it was due last night but it’s actually due a month from now so I was working pretty frantically on it LOL. At least I got a lot of work done.

I KNOW the sword looks bad.

#33

Guess what? I got my sketch posted on Animation Academy’s blog! See Oct. 20th Entry. I had issues trying to get a solid construction with my character design, so I made a skeleton for it.

I didn’t really think I would get any work posted on there, especially with all the talented artists I saw in the class. I was so freaking happy.

I’m still sketching… man I wish I had a tablet PC or a Cintiq, scanning my pages feels a little time consuming. Bah, I’m just whining :stuck_out_tongue:

But I am waiting for a Toshiba Tecra M7 to finally go Core 2 Duo with Santa Rosa chipset, then I’ll get a tablet PC.

#34

Hi

didn’t see your thread earlier than today… nice studies you made for the 1st challenge of the anatomy lesson series

I agree that the scanning of traditional drawings is timetaking and boring… especially coz the scanned image is hardly ever as good as the original…
… but drawing traditionally is such fun don’t you agree?

#35

Nice work you got here. I like the cartoon style in your drawings. I’m curious how that develops.

#36

Thanks for the comments guys, really lets me know that people are seeing my stuff.

Well it’s been awhile hasn’t it?

I’m still sketching away, at Borders. 30 minute guy from photo ref.

Playing with different body types and proportions.

Cousin at Christmas party.

BTW, I’ve finished my 9th sketchbook on Dec 17, 2006. Yay!

I plan on studying the works of Alphonse Mucha with some copies, so stay tuned.

Also in light of some threads talking about the quantity and quality of critiques on CGTalk I’ll make a major emphasis on how open I am to them on selected posts. Sometimes I’m drawing for fun so I’m not expecting serious crits. But keep an eye out for ones that I want to improve on. Hardcore crits FTW

#37

I’ve been working on a mech lately, figure I’d just post it. I think I’ve hit the part when you’re like “ok… now what?”

#38

now add highlights and then colour  :bounce: Good stuff!

#39

^^ Let’s see it!

First time in your gallery, I really enjoyed looking at your head studies. Keep up the good work!

#40

Cool, some visitors

Hmm, I think I’m working backwards then. I’m adding color then going to work on highlights.

Oh, and I did this in OpenCanvas so I’ll make a video of the progress when it’s done. Here’s a previous gif I made of the process.

Not the most dynamic of poses :hmm: But I gotta press on.
