Sketchbook Thread of Seabass

#1

Hi All,
I’m a newbie to the CG Society, so I thought I’d start with a sketchbook thread. These first postings are analog (charcoal and conte). I’m just starting to explore Painter so I expect that future postings will contain more purely digital work.

Wow!
Very nice sketches! Want to see more of these!
I like these lights and shadows!

Hello Seabass,

Welcome aboard! Some very nice traditional drawings here, are you currently in school? I hope you will take the time to look around the Anatomy Forum a bit and become acquainted with our other contributors - some really fantastic work going on, and it’s always nice to see a new person join. Grab a cup of coffee, and perhaps tell us something about your background and goals.

Cheers,

Welcome
Very nice studies. I think you did the shadows/highlights, the lighting, really well!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I’m glad you all like these - I was a little worried that traditional media might not be all that appropriate, given the CG context.

To answer your q’s, Rebeccak, I’m only a student of life (excuse that old cliche). A brief history of me: 19 years ago I completed my freshman year at Carnegie Mellon College of Fine Art but walked away because I just wasn’t ready for it and I got a liberal arts education instead (no regrets, btw). Since then I’ve been a furniture designer, woodworker and cabinet maker, gotten an M.S. from Georgia Tech in industrial design, and I’m currently a web/UI designer. I’ve always remained an art “dabbler” though, and now art is calling me back in a more serious way.

Right now my goal is simply to re-integrate art into my life - less work, more play - and see where it leads me. I feel that the most important thing for me at this point is to just keep drawing, keep painting, and be consistant in my practice (i.e. put in the time).

Other things I like to do: surf, cook, watch movies, be a dad to my beautiful 4 year-old girl, hang out w/my partner of 16 years, and just generally bum around.

More soon…

Here’s a WIP for OFDW - Mixed Masters - 20. I think I started it on Jan 8th or something, so didn’t even come close to finishing it before the deadline. I’m continuing to work on it none-the-less as it’s a great excercise. I’m looking forward to the next workshop (I’ll be sure to get in on that one a bit earlier).

Done in Painter, currently working on bringing all to a higher level of detail:

heya seabass! thanks for posting on my thread and i’m glad you liked my stuff. your drawings are very sweet aswell if i do say so myself. it’s great to see people coming back to drawing after so many years of being away from it. i really hope you continue to do it and also to post your stuff here so the rest of us can enjoy seeing your progress.

anyway, time to get to business. you’re sketches are great but often i see people here forget line quality in their persuit to get this amazing shading in their drawings. i think those first sketches could improve so much more if you were to add a veriety of lines to them. it’s surprising how a thick line suggests weight, depth and the source of light(like you have in your very first drawing). the way you have them now, all the lines are of equal value so the drawing looks like a sillhouette(spelling?) with very little depth to them. i hope you get what i mean and concider it next time you’re sketching… it may be troublesome at first, but after a while, it just becomes natural.

ok, enough of me. keep drawing!

Very nice sketches. Your traditional work with the conte is lovely, nice shading. I use traditional media too. Keep posting more sketches. Just have to comment on the eye …really well done.
