Your work is awsome…i wish i had enough money to sit in on some anatomy classes…It would be nice to learn a thing or 2 from some naked bodies…i wish 3d sk was free.
keep it up.
THE CLYKE,
I sent this message to you by pm, but thought that it would be useful to post here in case anyone else would benefit from the information:
Re: Anatomy Studies, and wishing that 3d.sk was free:
Do you know about our bi~weekly Open Figure Drawing Workshops? Every 2 weeks, I run a free workshop on the Anatomy Forum in which we work from tasteful photographs of models:
Open Figure Drawing Workshops with Hong Ly and Rebecca Kimmel
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2602753&postcount=3
So far, we’re on OFDW 012 ~ Elsie’s piece for OFDW 012 was frontpaged!
OFDW 012 was also an exception because we worked from a Master Painting vs. a set of photos. But we will be back to working from photos at some point.
Also check out my friend Hong Ly’s site:
www.characterdesigns.com, where he provides and updates free photos of models shot in artistic poses ~ see the photosets section.
Hope this helps, and I would encourage you to participate in our OFDWs! A new one starts in 2 weeks, but you are free to hop into OFDW 012, even though it’s already started.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Wow! Thanks a lot Zorrino and THE CLYKE!
Sorry for the delayed update, no exuse, but here is a quick sketch. I really want to focus on drawing from life and from master drawings so no more photo ref for now. Plus it was hard to have a nude pic on my computer with my mom constantly walking around.
I have had 3 private figure drawing sessions so far at an hour a week, not much. I have made some improvement from my first class but there too big to scan, maby a cell phone pic later.

[left]some sketchbook stuff

Oh and my Otis registration should be going out tomorrow.

rblitz7,
Your sketchbook studies are looking fantastic!
I understand the rationale behind not wanting to draw from photographs ~ to a degree ~ but I’m assuming that the sketchbook pieces were done from 2D reference, such as Hogarth and maybe Bridgeman ~ which, to my mind, is similar to drawing from a photograph ~ but I’ll leave that decision up to you.
All in all, some really great progress here, and I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll be showing us next!
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Yeah I have nothing against drawing from photgraphs but I think drawings help because a lot of times the forms are clearly defined and some stuff is exaggerated, so its good practice for a beginner.
Hi …Richie…
Nice studies…![]()
You know…once you learn and feel that you know the forms your studying, a good way to practice and perfect them, is to go to some place busy, with a lot of people…mall, park, ect.
find a nice little corner , conceal your sckech pad behind a news paper or whatever, and
just draw the people that apeal to your eyes and thoughs, people in motion, relaxing, whatever
I had a teacher years ago…Bill Oaks…big time illustrator…did Watergate courtroom hearings ect.
This was his teaching method…teaches speed, and accuracy happens the more you practice it.
It was a lot of fun, and I also learned a lot, in a short period of time.
I just thought I would mention it, after reading about you not wanting to work from photo’s.
This is the first time in my life, that I ever worked from photo’s, …has it’s place, but there
is nothing like the real thing…
Hope to see a lot more more drawings from you on here…I really enjoy them…![]()
TAKE CARE
Glenn
Hey thanks a lot Glen! Ill try to do some scribbles of kids in class. Anyway here are some really crappy cell phone pics of a few life drawings, but these are just the beginning!

yeah I know front foot is too big.

rblitz7,
Heya, good to see you back!
It looks like your classes are going quite well! How are you finding them?
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Pretty good!
Ive had about 4 one hour private classes and one 2 hour figure drawing class. The 2 bottom drawings are from the class which I was only able to take because I was off from school.
Glad to hear!
Definitely looking forward to seeing your improvement through the course. :wip:

Yes I have, the link is in my sig. Im reworking my comp right now and it is much better in my opinion from my previous sketch. Im in the process of drawng a bird right now, trying to get the right look.
WOW! I CANT EXPECT TO GET INTO CALARTS GOING LIKE THIS!
First of all BIG thanks to you Rebecca for putting my Gymnast pic in the best of forum!!
I have taken a break from figure drawing classes because my tennis conflited with it. I only chose to do tennis because when am I going to have the chance to play high school varsity tennis again, won my match today btw:)
Ill start off with my attempt at a self portrait entirely using a mirror, WIP.

Now some sketchbook stuff.

I really enjoyed visiting CalArts over spring break, all the students seem really devoted to their work. I realize the school is very competitive especially the animation program so I better get in gear.
rblitz7,
Great to see you back ~ and you’re quite welcome!
One thing about CalArts ~ PLEASE don’t put all your eggs in one basket. From what I understand, they really only accept a tiny percentage of students ~ an even smaller percentage than does Yale. :argh: Them’s long odds, slim! NOT to discourage you, but just so you know to apply to more than one good art school. I’ve been hearing more about them recently (a friend was rejected, in fact) and it just seems like a really tough school to get into. So that’s my soapbox speech.
I’m liking your first few sketchbook pages especially! Nice work there. What kind of paper are you using? I really like the tone.
What’s the gameplan, slim? How much time do you have to prepare your portfolio? I’m sure the portfolio reviewers will want to see traditional color pieces as well.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Yeah I think they only accept like 15-20 high school grads into the animation program!! Yikes! I have about 9 months till the deadline for CalArts. I also plan on applying to SCAD, AAU, RISD, and maby Ringling. Hopefully the Summer of Art at Oris will help but im not relying on it. Im also gona be taking a portfolio prep class at the beginning of my senior year. Im using a Moleskine sketchbook.
Oh, that’s cool that you’re applying to several different schools.
RISD has always had a good reputation, but I don’t know anything about their animation program. SCAD and Ringling seem to have good reputations. I’ve heard really mixed things about AAU.
I don’t recall if I mentioned before, but have you ever attended one of the Portfolio Day Events?
http://www.npda.org/events.html
I may have mentioned it before, but it is definitely something to look into ~ you get your portfolios evaluated by different reps that get together for mass portfolio reviews.
Anyway, the Otis program sounds promising, and that should give you some more pieces. Maybe you could tackle and oil self~portrait.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Hey Rebecca! My art teacher recently told me about the Long Island Academy of Fine Art, which offers Saturday classes in traditional painting and drawing. After calling the director he said high school students thrive in the environment. Check out the site here http://www.liafa.com/
