Sketchbook Thread of Paul Holmes

#1

Ive decided to make a sketchbook thread to get some drawing skillz. I like to draw characters and creatures, but im not very good right now. Mostly I get an idea when were watchen a movie or somthing in class, and sketch it out small, then when I get home I try to do a larger version.
Enough talk. Here I go.

A rushed character sketch:

Robot Design:

A odd bean shaped animal:

The idea for this was it only has one leg, and uses the tail and its extra bigg foot to balance, but you cant tell real well from the side view. Any tips on illustrating one leggedness from a side view?

Welcome Paul! I think the most important thing is to draw from life. There’s no real substitute for it in terms of learning to draw - doing so will aid your character creation enormously. Are you in the position to be able to take any life drawing classes? Alternately, I recommend drawing people in the streets etc. It will really help a lot!

Thanks for the tip! Im not in a position I could take a life drawing class right now, but would be able to practice by drawing people from “life” and stuff as you said. Im definitely going to start trying that.

I decided to do another real quick silly character, this one reminds me of that show Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Cute! Another great way to study the figure if you don’t have access to a model is to do master studies. Check out the sticky in this forum about Master Copy Resources, and also take a look at the Open Figure Drawing Workshop series in the Tutorials and Workshops forum. It’s a great way to improve one’s draughtsmanship overall, and will translate directly into drawing better characters as well.

Thanks!
Been a while, 2 more drawings. Darn, both orthographic side views. Tomarrow I will try to draw from some life, I promise :).
A very quick side sketch of an imaginary guy with an afro (my scanner dosn’t seem to pick up the shadding very well at all, but thats not really an excuse :)):

An alien sketch, I kind-of like this one, maybe I will try a good perspective view with him:

Peace

H!

Nice sketches.

Would love to see you do some human anatomy studies. I’m sure it will help you in your character design

Very unique sketches you have. To add to the great advice already given by NR43 and Rebecca, I’m going to give you a piece of advice Rebecca gave me. It may help in your development to have a goal for where you want to go. Think about what you most want to improve on, and work towards that.
