Sketchbook Thread of Oscen

#1

Hi, I’m new here and thought I’d try this out.
I’ve been drawing for 8 years now, mostly as a hobby but I do get some freelancing from time to time. My problem is that I never learned or took drawing classes, except for two Figure Drawing classes in high school so I haven’t really gotten the basics down, and it influences my present work.

Anyway, on with it

Skull, drawn from reference, mechanical pen.

Hi…Oscen…

Nice job on that skull…a little more work on the planes of the forhead and top domeshape of the skull, maybe…
I like the very tight rendering in the areas where you really went for the values/darks to lights, and your line is GREAT…
REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING MORE OF YOUR WORK AND PROGRESS…KEEP POSTING
TAKE CARE

SpiritDreamer: Thank you  I added a bit of shading on the dome and made the cranium slightly bigger, also worked a bit more on it.

Rebeccak: Thanks  Actually, I have no professional training behind me, except for two classes in Figure Drawing I took in two different (and too long apart) semesters in high school. Other than that, I am completely self taught. I’m 22 years old, and I started fiddling with Photoshop around 7 years ago, and then I also got into other programs such as Illustrator and Flash.

I am an avid fan of animation so it started from there. My drawings mostly consist of animation art/cartoony art, and now I really want to get to the basics to better myself. I sketch a lot, and love doing traditional stuff, but mostly work in the digital environment. I’ve never managed to get used to sketching straight into the computer with the Wacom though, that is something I want to be able to grasp as well.

I work full time in marketing, mainly as a graphic designer, doing commercials, graphics, brochures, website maintenance etc. And on the side I work as a freelance artist, mainly in doing character design among other things for companies over here

I tinkered with the skull a bit, looking at my reference again. Put some shading on the dome and enlarged the cranium ever so slightly. I also fixed the jaw a bit because I felt it was a bit thin in the last version

And I went to this little workshop in the beginning of this year that spanned 6 weeks. I had never done that before. We were mostly learning color theory, but I also got to do a sheep skull. I wasn’t too happy about the horns, but considering I had never done this before I thought it came out alright.
Done with pencil and chalk (taken with my camera phone, so sorry about the lack of quality)

keep going!

Really like the sheep skull drawing. I think it came out very well. Though the human skull looks a bit cartoonish to me. Maybe just because it seem that it’s smiling, with that jaw bone down.
Any more stuff from the workshop you went?

Man I’m terrible when it comes to updating my sketchbook threads x__x;;

NR43: Thank you, I will

razz: Yeah I think you’re right about the skull. Next time I’m going to get a better picture that’s more realistic or so to say
That’s the only drawing I did at the workshop, most of the time we just studied color theory and blended paints to make a color chart :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, my computer is down at the moment so I can’t post a lot but I did this one the other day and kind of liked it. The only sad part about is is that I couldn’t do a background because the paper I used was a reject from the company I used to work for, so that would’ve shown through quite easily
