Sketchbook Thread of Neeko

#1

My hope is that this digital sketchbook will allow me to see where I’m heading with my technique and where I’ve been. Critiques and comments are always welcomed.

To begin, I’m trying to tackle hands and feet. So,… the majority of these drawings will be of this subject for quite a while.

#2

More hands. Relearning old poses and getting the hand of new. Hope to have an arsenal of poses that come naturally.

#3

Almost done with the week hand study. I kind of like the repetition of it. When I get to a point where I’m like “ugh, again?” I think to myself “How can I make it different. How can I make this one sketch again my own?”

#4

With this hand pose I’ve reached the point where the repetition has become a chore. It wouldn’t be so bad if I understood why didn’t get the drawing close to the pose, and thus why I didn’t understand the “hand”. So this page is pretty much full of the same attempt at the same pose. Fun.

#5

Tried a different technique for hands and it seems to be working. I have a better understanding of the palm and fingers ant the fatty thumb.

#6

Started sketching larger versions. Taking it slower, quality over quantity. Still working on the quality portion.

#7

Worked on contour lines, simple versions to see if I can draw hands without sketching guides first. It’s still very weak, but practice practice practice.

#8

I’m impressed by your dedication to this study. I’m sure it will pay off. I ought to be doing more work like it.

#9

Thanks! Hands and feet are something I’ve always hid or cut of in drawings. So rather than accepting my inability to draw them right here I am sketching them until I hate them, or love them. Either way I hope they will eventually become second nature.

#10

More work with contour hands. Trying to get that spacing down.

#11

A bit more complex set of contour lines for hands. Trying to not get lazy, but not to focused either. Working on those confident lines.

#12

Started working on feet. Took me some time to figure out the bone and box structure. Work in progress.

#13

More feet. I find feet surprisingly more fun to do. May have to do with that toes are shorter than fingers. But my feet still look deformed.

#14

I find the bottom of the feet much more fun than the top , side or straight on view. I really dislike the straight on view.

#15

Day 13:

yay, more feet

#16

day 14:

Feet. Exclamation mark.

#17

day 15:

Saw Xmen first class where beast has hands-like feet. I’m actually pretty glad our feet look the way they do now.

#18

More feet. Switched to .7 on the mechanical lead. Kind of like the extra width it gives.

#19

Big feet. Not so fond of how the slight angle from the under foot looks, more practice on that one.

#20

Day 18. Really enjoy drawing feet apparently. Too bad they will most likely be hidden by shoes or boots. Boo.
