Sketchbook Thread of Matt Ellis

These are amazing! You’ve got some real talent there, shading, colours, composition, gesture, form - everything is first class and you do it so quickly too! Incredible, simply incredible. The only thing that annoys me in these is the face of the woman holding the other woman because it’s the kind of face I would draw after 3 hours of hard labour, and that would be one of my better faces - but I see your other stuff and know that even in 15 minutes you could do so much better.

This is my favourite out of your recent ones:

Never mind the fact it’s a 15minute job, it’s already perfect.

Hey thanks for the comments , I really think these quick sketches are helping me improve a ton , just trying to get it in time before the clock runs out is tons of fun , but I dont have much time now just because I am trying to work on a matte painting for the Gnomon challenge this month.

But here are 2 more 30 min sketches that I have done the other day and tonight. Trying to start using color. It is proving to be more of a challenge then i thought. If you are interested in my process I can post a quick tutorial in here , thou its pretty basic stuff

Hey Matt, there’s some great work going on in here! The quickie sketches are very impressive, and oddly enough, the first black and white 15 minute sketch is my favourite of the ones you’ve poste so far, as some of the detailing in the longer ones is killing the illusion at times, especially when you take small brushes to the eyes. But that’s just personal preference!

The environmental stuff is pretty impressive too! Love the sci-fi looking bridge in black and the autumnal-looking setting with the odd structures in it. The torch-lit castle in the forest looks a bit washed out, especially where the stairs come down to the forest at the bottom, maybe a bit more darkness in the shadows would help it pop and really focus the attention on leading up to the castle.

But very nice stuff, keep it up!

Hey Sam , thanks a lot for taking the time to crit some of my work. I agree with you about the 15 min sketch being the best out of what i have done so far. And I also agree with what your saying about the jungle temple painting. I think sometime soon I will actually go in and fix all that stuff up. My biggest problem is that I get bored of a painting and do something else , leaving what i was working on unfinished and I think i gotta slap myself in the face soon and get most of those environments done!

Also I would like to say I viewed your sketchbook before and you have some amazing stuff in there! Really nice work

Some more 30 min sketches from lastnight:

And here is the matte painting I am working on for the Gnomon challenge this month , I changed it a lot from the other version i have in this thread, still lots of work left to go on it thou

Cheers!

Hi

wow you’re very talented!

I would love to see you do some head studies…
There’s an awesome thread called something like “Anatomy Lessons: Heads” full of references.
Would love to see you give some of those some attention
