Sketchbook Thread of Matt Ellis

#1

Hey Everyone

Thought I would start up an anatomy thread since I plan on learning more about human and animal anatomy I am starting to learn character modeling in 3d as well as improving my drawing skills. And some crits on my work would really help out.

CHEERS!

Matt,

It’s fantastic to see your new thread! What are your plans in terms of the type of work you will do here / projects / etc?

Cheers,

Hey Matt, looks good so far. The waves and water came out great. The skin looks dead… I don’t know the original though, so maybe thats the point.

#6

Hey everyone thanks for the comments

Rebecca- Well for this thread I will just be showing anatomy studies as well as character design in both 2D and 3D. I am really trying to improve and i think here i will get some good crits that will help out big for me.

Queensoul- Hahaha what does this mean!?

Adam- Thanks man! im going to try and pull some stuff out for this thread on a regular basis , well im hoping:)

Se7en- Hey thanks for the comment , yeah she does look dead. I didnt add any color to her on this version of the painting.

here is A domestic dog skull that I painted tonight , and im hoping to paint a dog this week.

Matt,

This is looking really good so far. Definitely check out the following link:

About the SurgiCat Database:

Follow the link to the SurgiCat database, where you can search the Royal College of Surgeon’s collection of anatomical specimens. I’m sure you could find some excellent reference for the skeleton / anatomy of different types of canines.

Looking forward to seeing your update!

Cheers,

~Rk

Here is my Mastter copy OF Hong Ly’s photo
Hope you all like it and crits and most welcome.

#9

Matt,

It’s great to see both studies ~ I’ve commented already on your OFDW piece (would love to see you take this further and / or tackle a new piece) ~ but would really like to see the canine skull and skeleton taken further.

Nice work so far!

Cheers,

~Rk

Pelt Merchant of Cairo
Oil on canvas, 1869

#12

Matellis, great work!

This last one looks wonderful, you have painted the fur very well!

#13

Matt,

There are aspects of this painting that are starting to look gorgeous ~ the face and turban, helmet, claw and front face of the wall for example have really come together and show a lot of skill. Of course as you know I think the following areas could be improved:

Really great stuff here, Matt, and it’s been great to have you produce two lovely pieces for the OFDW. I really hope you will push them further, but will understand if you do not.

Cheers,

Hi Matt, you have some lovely works here. I like the lighted bridge and also the stair/pathway in the forest. Maybe add a little bit of detail work on a few of the trees closer to the foreground. I like that image alot.

#18

Hey Matt, I’ve seen / commented a lot of this before, but: http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/7695/graveyardrp0.jpg was new to me. That one seems like a really neat idea. The saucer looking ships in the sky are very playful and the huge ships on the ground look very strong. Kind of grabs that ‘army disembarking’ feel, and maybe with a unifying gold overtone it would be a nice piece.

Love the sketchs, you really have to take your sketchbook to work with you more (all) the time
