Sketchbook Thread of kSeth

Thanks for the encouragement! Posted a reference pic at the beginning of the thread, hope it helps. Was out of town this weekend, just a little back-log, hah!

First one is crazy off because I was in a coffee shop and was lossing the reflection off the windows when the sun came up. After looking through zhuzhu’s thread I’m really trying to express the most with the least amount of clutter. Really, really need to boil a pot of coffee and take some time to look through that thread. Just want to work on simplifying everything while still communicating. Huge hurdle I’m currently stuck on.

Hi there
great to see your improvement!
be sure to check the width of the mouth area. If you look at the reference you will see that when you draw an imaginary vertical line from both corners of the mouth, you will end up in the center of the eyes. This isn’t always the case in your drawings.

I also think you tend to draw the chin a bit too narrow. This gives the impression you have a long, narrow head. I don’t see that in the ref.

Last crit for now would be the eyebrows, which I think are thick and short rather than long and fine.

n e way,
there is loads of progression already visible, particularly the shading.

great work!
Looking forward to see more of you soon

Keep going! One thing I suggest is trying different media on occasion - different drawing implements and different paper. You will surprise yourself with the results.

Took forever to get this project started again! Procrastination is the devil!

I think it would be too spammy to update all my pics, so instead I’ll just leave this link for anyone interested and start updating daily.

Seth I love your head drawings, really nice. Charcoal and newsprint work really nice. I gotta try some finished work on smooth newsprint because I love to work on that too. Looking forward to see more drawings.

kSeth, lots of good stuff, I really enjoy the energy in these.
My critique would be think a little more about structure and go a little easier on the halftones. Here is a demonstration I did in a class that I hope will help.

Hi…Seth …

Your capturing some great expressions there …
Have you ever tried conti crayons on a large pad of newsprint …the redish brow crayons give you a really nice look. Use the whole side of the crayon…creates a nice crisp edge…save the fine line for accent at the end.
Besides the Loomis books, another artist that you might really enjoy, and was great at using conti crayons capturing expression in the face, is Burne Hogarth…If you can, buy his book called …DRAWING THE HUMAN HEAD. That book will give you all of the ins and outs about structure that Gist just mentioned.
GREAT BOOK, AND TEACHER…
Looking forward to seeing more of your work and progress …
TAKE CARE
Glenn
