Sketchbook Thread of kSeth

#1

ing Hey everyone, decided to start a sketch thread to keep me more discliplined. I’m trying to follow the 1portrait/day for a 1000 pieces like http://www.androidjones.com. Atleast this way, I’ll have something to feel bad about if I miss my daily sketch.

Oh, sorry about polluting the boards with my ugly mug for a few years, hah =P

kSeth,

Welcome. I look forward to seeing more of your work. What is your art bkgrd / training? What are your goals?

Keep working in this direction and trying harder and harder to define the subtle planes of the face with greater and greater sensitivity and economy of line.

Cheers,

Yay you made a sketchbook! I’m telling ya, it’s going to help, Welcome aboard! Now draw draw draw!

#5

Working on clearly defining planes. Tradition materials are the tricky though =/

NR43: Thanks, it’s going to be a long hike, lol

Rebeccak: Ah, I’m currently a Design student trying to brush up my illustration skills. I’m really want to be able to produce really polished illustrations like yours so I figured I should start working on my fundementals. Oh, and obviously I’m a Loomis junkie.

Roja: Hehe, thanks for the encouragement!

I like your last one! Your shading technique looks really cool. I like the blocky “pencil lines” for lack of a better word. That’s good for learning planes. Obviously I don’t have a ref to compare it to, but what stands out to me is that the lips might be a bit too high, and try to put more of a plane on the front of the nose.

kSeth,

Good to hear about your bkgrd, and thanks for the compliment!

I just posted a tutorial yesterday which I hope you might find of use:

TUTORIAL/Exercise - Cross Contour Drawing - by Rebeccak - (Nude 3D Model by Mashru)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=463334

I really think that doing this exercise is really helpful in terms of mapping out the ‘terrain’ of the face.

Cheers!

I think I need to get some paper with more teeth. I’m guessing charcoal is easier to control with a heavier grain paper right?

Roja: Ack, yeah proportions are off, struggling lol

Rebeccak: Thanks for the link, tutorial is very useful. Will definately post up contour portrait in the future.

Hi…Seth…

I like your charcoal technique…
If you can, get a book called DRAWING THE HUMAN HEAD, BY BURNE HOGARTH…will really help you out at this point in your journy.
You can get it on the internet…Amazon .com…or Alibris .com…used is cheap… …He has a lot of other books also… they are all really great, and are invaluble as learning tools…
He used to work with CONTI CRAYON on news print…most of the heads in that book I mentioned are done with that technique…almost like charcoal, but better I think…that reddish color conti crayon produces really nice results on newsprint…
I like the planes your getting in those faces you posted…keep a close eye on the angles of the bottom of chin, nose eyes ect…in relation to each other…will keep the face from getting that slightly tweaked look.
That book will show you how to get the head right from all different angels…GREAT BOOK…
I have enjoyed seeing your thread so far, and am really looking forward to seeing your progress in it…nice start…
TAKE CARE
Glenn

Rough night, heh, still idealizing my proportions. Working, working working…

SpiritDreamer: Thanks for the advice, definately working on it. The concept of angles is a little over my head, but I’ll grind in to it. Just grabbed that book (and Burne’s drapery book) out of our library at school. Reading during reading week hah.

1000 self-portraits you say? Nice  You know if you make two a day you’ll reach a 1000 faster, haha. Don’t forget to do other stuff too, like the whole body anatomy! Or is it just portraits you’re interested?

#13

do some wearing hats, sunglasses, jewelry etc too

Really like the feeling you’ve gotten in this one, take a look at the drawings of Nicolai Fechin, his linework is some of the most incredible that I have ever seen. It’s great to see the variety of your experimentation. One thing I might recommend is interspersing your self portraits with drawings of simple objects / organic forms, such as round fruit (apples, pears etc.) and to do extended studies of these forms to really get and create a sense of roundness and depth. I think an area to really pay close attention to in the sp’s is the area of the eyesockets, which need I think more depth. The skull is built to protect the eyes, so they should be a bit recessed into the depth of sockets which provide protection. Keep going, it’s obvious that you are learning a lot from these.

Ack, catching up from the weekend! Sorry about the creepy distortions. Never notice them until I’ve done the shading. Gotta plan more carefully next time. These were all done on newsprint with charcoal. Very easy to blend, and build layers.

razz: Ah, yeah I do anatomy studies too. Imspired from Loomis’ figure stuff. I’ll post something next time I get to see a live model.

NR43: Definately going to try do someone more interesting stuff, with expressions etc. Hats, jewellery sounds hilarious. Figured I’d iron out my basics with the first 500, =P

Rebeccak: Sounds like a good idea to try a couple stills-lifes. Used to do a ton of them in ps way back, should really try it with charcoal

There’s a nicer sense of looseness and comfort with this last piece. I think it’s coming mainly from your practice, keep it up.

It’s really fun to see your progress. How some sp’s turned out better and some not, but all in all they’re getting better, like this last one, looks good! Maybe post a photo of yourself so we could see the likeness you get with these. Keep working there, still a lot to reach a thousand, haha
