Sketchbook Thread of Kaosfusion

#1

Hey hows it going. I’m 19 years old. Haven’t had any formal training whatsoever. I’m currently going to ITT tech(doubt I’ll stay there long). I never did that much drawing when I was little, I mainly was a writer and worked a lot on computer hardware. Now my writing doesn’t have the same flair I use to have with it and computer hardware is great but I want to lean more towards programming which is what I was headed for but didn’t work out to well(don’t get me wrong I like programming just decided to wait and work my art skills first) mainly because my keen interest is game design now(yea its an impossible job but I want to learn as much art as possible and broaden my viewpoints). I’m hoping to learn as much as I possibly can and improve upon my drawing technique to my own type of “kaos-fusion type style”

well here’s the first 3 from my sketchbook
Drawing 1 and 2 are reference from an anime
Drawing 3 is something goofy I was doing.

Drawing 3 - C monster (wierd little thing aint it?)

and if anyone can recommend me some good tutorials and workshops for the beginner than that would be cool.

Kaosfusion,

Welcome! I think that the following threads will be of use to you. I highly recommend purchasing the book which this first Workshop Thread follows, “The NEW Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”:

BEGINNERS’ Drawing Workshop - Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

Also check out:

Beginners’ Lounge

Resources for Beginners

I think that you ought to try the exercises in the DOTRSOTB book mentioned above. The lessons are classic and extremely useful to someone new to drawing. I hope to see your exercises here.

Cheers,

-Rebeccak

Heres 3 more.

Kinda like the last 3 I drew 2 from reference anime and the last one is an attempt to draw Sieg Warheit from Chaos Legion. Had a problem doing his hair though, so I’m kinda on WIP stage with the last one.

Sieg Warheit from Chaos Legion (just need to figure out how to redraw the face and add the hair)

Meantime I’ll work on fundamentals. Like drawing the 4 basic shapes, hands, and eyes.

Kaosfusion,

It’s completely fine to post your Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain exercises here. What I might recommend just as an exercise is to trace some drawings to get the feel of the linework involved. For example:

Try tracing this image just to get a nice feel for what a hand looks like on paper. Be patient with yourself. Hands are the hardest to draw. Then try more of the exercises in the book, and post them here.

Cheers,

Well I thought about it my problem could lie in the fact of lacking patience and the fact that I’m not perceiveing the depth or actual width of my hand. I went ahead and traced out my left hand to use as a reference for another set of drawings.

Drawing 1 - traced left hand front

Drawing 2 - Traced left hand back.

Drawing 3 - Left hand L shape.

I know that the point is not to just trace my hand but to gain some sort of perception of a hands natural curves and width and depth. Which I’m having a little trouble seeing. I’m going to try to trace out the picture you put up tonight and post it later this week.

Isn’t that what drawing is all about?
You are definetely on the right track in your mind. You can only draw what you see. The good thing is: the more you draw, the more you will see…

Well heres a progress update. I’ve finished up 2nd exercise in the book and gonna work on exercise 3. Kinda tough when I’m trying to draw, model in 3dsmax, and do work in photoshop.

Anyways here are the pics and the comments

Well first off this was the hand tracing bit I ended up condensing the picture and hands looked very scrunched. Also the thumb and pinky are very disfigured mostlikely due to me condensing it. It was either that or I rushed the drawing too much in its entirety.

Here is my self portrait redone, had to see where I was at since break…

Here is the friend drawing redone - needed to see where I was at since the break.

Here is the hand drawing redone - I’m somewhat satisfied with it even though its not a freehand drawing, The contours for the thumbs are off but it ended up a little better than the last few attempts still I feel like I’ll never be able to draw a hand if it’s set in different position out beside laying flat on a surface.

last but not least is the vase portrait from exercise 2. yea I drew it right-handed and yea I did get stuck when trying to draw it again. I ended up just trying to draw the same way I tried to draw it the first time. my head really just didn’t pick up that I need to just draw the opposite way probably because I was to focused on the meanings of attributes of the face and was drawing from top to bottom rather than bottom to top.

Hope to have another update till then laterz…
