Sketchbook Thread of Jonathan (2D/3D)

#1

I recently bought a book on traditional art (2D), so I’m going through it.

You’ll have to excuse my first image, as cannot find my power cable/brick for my scanner, so I used my camera for a quick shot.

One of the first lessons (after a little prefatory information, drawing circles, lines, etc.) was contours and drawing something. Now this isn’t including the rule of thirds, shading, etc. just plain ol’ looking at something and drawing it. So I grabbed a shoe and started drawing. This took me about 35 minutes or so, so I guess I’m going a little slow.

Soon I’ll start on your basic anatomy-type work, but this is just sorta preliminary I suppose.

(Edit: I somehow wrote “01” instead of “07” for the year, I guess I’m just sleepy, as I finished at 12:55 AM. )

MrJonathan,

Welcome aboard!

What book, may I ask, are you using? I highly recommend checking out this book and thread:

BEGINNERS’ Drawing Workshop - Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=269026

It’s a classic work, there are a few others here working from it - check out deco’s thread:

One thing I ask is that you keep posts to a pixel width of 800 pixels maximum - this prevents people from having to scroll. I look forward to seeing your progress!

Cheers,

Thanks for the reply
Here’s the book I’m using,
http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Drawing-Book-Step-step/dp/1593372132/sr=8-1/qid=1169401606/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-3658243-5724130?ie=UTF8&s=books
In this book this horse is drawn, so I used it as a reference to try to practice giving objects a more “3d” appearance through shading, though I have a lot more to learn.
And here’s another sketch I did quickly while in a waiting room at the doctor’s office.

Oh, and sorry for the big picture size. My monitor on the left of me is at 1920x1440, and the one on the right is at 1280x1024, so sometimes I forget and don’t realize how big the image is if I leave it on the left one (CRT). I’ll resize the rest to 640x480

Hi, MrJonathan,

Oh, I really love that sneaker, the details are good and it really shows nice depth. You’ve managed to make a sneaker into an interesting object to look at.

I think the horse is nice too, but it somehow doesn’t have as much depth as the sneaker. I wonder if that is the drawback to drawing from pictures rather than “real life” objects, like the sneaker (I read that if you don’t have people available as models to draw from, that drawing anything from life is the next best thing). Or, maybe you found the sneaker more interesting to draw and so were maybe better able to capture it? (don’t mind me, I’m still trying to figure out how all this works - you are off to a great job so far! )

How do you like the book so far? Have you done much drawing before this? Am really looking forward to see your progress as you work through it!

I haven’t had much time to put into practice anything I have learned from the book, but I will soon hopefully, mainly with blocking out characters to achieve better proportion and anatomy.

The book is good, but I think there are better ones, I just sorta blindly bought this one because I was in a rush and needed to go (bought it at a local Barnes and Noble).

Perhaps the sneaker has more life to it because I spent longer on it than the horse. I was drawing the horse while moving from waiting room to office, etc. while at the doctor’s office with a relative waiting for them, hehehe, so I was a little distracted.

Oh, and thanks for your time.
