Sketchbook Thread of Johan Derycke

#1061

Hey Johan,

This girl in a uniform is…wow! Did you use ref or drawn from imagination? The cloth folds are great!
The dark-light quality from the previous sketch is also very nice!

Suggestion about the woman with the kid: From what I can understand, you tried to capture the scene from above. You could make reference perspective lines and place the figures with boxes and basic shapes, inside. Then you could add details.

#1062

Hey Johan!! Welcome back! Love those life-studies and vehicle drawings!

#1063

nice life studies Johan… Charcoal sketches are really good

#1064

wow,Great update, I like your quick sketches.

Thank you!

perfectly right about the hit and run piece. Will have to dig a lil deeper into it to get that right starting sketch. My initial thought was to have a low viewing angle because it would emphasize the child. I intend to make it quite shocking, really, but anywayz… it’s like a good stew that needs to be cooked long enough te get a good result
Mechanika is a nice book, but as with most books, those workflow descriptions only really help if you are already skilled enough.
You should be doing great with it.

ForzaInter
Hey good to see you here!
The uniformed babe is just a quick sketch after the ImagineFX 36 cover by Aly Fell
About the hit and run piece: I actually started with the child and drew the woman around it, obviously not the ideal way to go, but it still needs a lot of thought…
Thanks for your help!

Anand
Thanks. I’m never away my friend, even when I’m not posting often (;

jesu
Thanks. Still needs a lot of improvent imho

Thanks. Actually, compared to the charcoals on big paper, these quick warmup sketches are a lot more lively I think. I like them too, dispite the usual weaknesses like proportions etc.

So a bit more sketches from life classes:

Warmups in ballpen

Charcoals on big textureless paper (which is aweful I think, but I had it layin around so I might as well use it) I seriously screwed up here LOL

And another PITT brush pen sketch

#1067

Hey Johan! The ball pen studies are beautiful! Charcoal on smooth paper is difficult isn’t it! I love how you drew the shoulder on the second one in the last post!

#1068

Man all the posts in 1065 look terrific! What is it with you and ball point pens? Works very well indeed.

Cheerio Chris

#1069

Female studies looking super cool … esp. the last one.
me also doing female now days but from images …… I feel doing live will always be a dream.

#1070

I agree, those ballpoint pen sketches are really solid. Really enjoying the stuff you’re posting, mate. Good times watching you improve. Very inspirational.

#1071

My favorite one is the last! Very interesting white-gray-dark combination!

One comment for the first two: try not avoid drawing hands and feet. It might be the most difficult part, but it’s a good practice for sure. If you don’t have enough space to draw them on the figure, try and draw them larger on a paper corner, and then when you have understood their gesture, draw them more abstract.

Hi …Johan

GREAT FLOW and LINE with that pen work…Maybe try red ink pen and really sharpened to a fine point pastel pencils…maybe even combine them in the same figure study…you might get a really nice result…Just a passing thought… Burne Hogarth showed me some of his note books when I was taking his class years ago…Most of his drawings were in red pen if I remember right, or pastel pencil…it was one of the two anyway.
The red linework gave the drawings a really nice feel…had alot to do with the color red…I think it has a way of evoking energy, in the veiwers eye, and also in the artist that is drawing with it…just a thought.
Anyway Johan…Keep up the GREAT work and progress…ALWAYS a real pleasure seeing both.
TAKE CARE
Glenn

Hi Anand, thank you sir!
Need to practice A LOT with charcoal, luckily I will live for a 1000 years LOL

Chris
Heh ballpen is my favourite medium. I have some bad habbits with pen though like screwing up the eyes in portraits (just take a look at the portrait below and you’ll see)

kasana
I love the female body hehe, but to be honest I wouldn’t mind a male model in class every now and then either.

Thanks mate. Been going through a somewhat rough period lately… wasn’t even enjoying my drawing much. I am really glad I got out of it and I’m actually having loads of fun drawing again now! Up’s and down’s… that’s life…

ForzaInter
Yeah I want to buy some real markers to sketch… they are very expensive though at 25€ for a set… so just waiting a bit more before I buy those… perhaps for Xmas

Hi Glenn
Thanks for the tip! Will see if I can find a red pen that isn’t too greasy.
Should be fun to combine with other media…
Thanks also for your support!

more life drawing from Monday and Tuesday

#1074

and some more from the last 2 days

this one is obviously unfinished and actually not that good now that I look at the scanned version

Got a lot of wow’s and aah’s in class for this one (red aquarel pencil)

#1075

you are doing greaat with the mediums… i like the last one too
suggestion-hav you tried bridgeman?since its whole concept is about solidity and form i think it’l really help you

#1076

HEY Johan

GREAT updates…I really like those feet studies…especally the second one.
On your faces…it’s a good idea to really get the eye socket bone structure in place and refined as much as possible first…shadows ect.,…Then concentrate on the eye lids, tops, and then especally the bottom ones…Then put the eyeballs in there last…consentrating on the shadows.
That red one is GREAT…nice MOOD/FEELING…

If you are able to, get the book…THE ARCAHE EYE OF BURNE HOGARTH…It’s full of his red drawings…might give you alot of ideas and inspiration…GREAT BOOK…FULL OF HIS SKETCHES AND PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON LIFE AND ART:)
I bought it awhile back and got it out to see some of those red drawings that I mentioned to you earlier…Some of the ones I saw years ago in his small sketchbooks are in there…was nice to see them again…
That book is not expensive ether, only a few bucks if I remember right.
I bought my online…ALIBRIS. com…I think…or Amazon. com…can’t remember at the moment…but it’s deffenitly a good one to have in your personal library…
Anyway, keep up the GREAT work and progress Johan…Always a pleasure visiting your thread…

Glenn

Hey Johan! Wonderful drawings again! Love the feet!

#1078

Hi Johan
I would pretty much have to agree that the last sketch is right on. I really like big hands on a model and these are very expressive. Also the shape of the legs are great and the whole figure seems in balance. The only thing I can see is the upper arm muscle looks a bit symetrical, even though it is only a sketch the concave shape on the under part would be slid lower down on the arm I think.

Very nice stuff indeed

Cheerio Chris

Hi man,
thanks for comments, and yeah I like to make and watch those kind of life sketches. It’s showing how artist is thinking and observing, so we are exploring his mind and learning something new about him.

But I really hate when there is no free sit places in the bus…

#1080

Some really nice recent life drawings here!

Nice feet too, those are tough from certain angles and you’ve done a good job with them.
