Well I have been sick again this week, still not well actually. I wonder why I’m having so many health problems this year. The healthier I live, the sicker I get… bah

I haven’t done a lot this week so here are some doodles and sketches I did at the office…
I’ve a lot less work to do lately so instead of browsing the internet I decided to do more sketching whenever I can (I hope my bosses don’t read this)

Here’s a selection

#1004

Wow dude, nice work with those perspective sketches! I’d love to see you work those skills into a painting

#1005

Thanks Jason.
Yep, that’s the plan…eventually… trying to get used to it and hoping to develop a good feel for perspective…

Worked a bit more on this SP

And another vehicle… I was sketching thumbs all week on the topic “vehicle with one wheel and one chair” but wasn’t very successful coming up with a good design.
Picked the one I liked the most and will hopefully try to develop it in a painting

#1006

Hey Johan!

Definitely I have to check your sketchbook more regularly, I always get lost here when I try to catch up with your progress:scream: . Inspiring to see your experiments with all the different medias and subjects, some results are really amazing and I especially love your ballpen studies:thumbsup: . And now you even make exiting concept vehicles, I’m impressed.

Soon back to see more stuff!

Have a nice week!

Really great post, dude. That Joker piece is really turning out wonderfully. The values look spot on - when you squint you can barely tell it’s a painting.

#1008

Hi Johan

Great to see all your updates - I have to agree with Sabrina; getting lost here
especially as I’ve been absent for a while, soooo much has happened here!

I really like your weekend blip vehicle! what a cool way to get around + it has a
really friendly ‘creaturesque’ feel about it!

Joker is looking awesome

cheers and take care!
a.

#1009

HEY …Johan…FANTASTIC job so far on that JOKER…:applause:  :arteest:

TAKE CARE
Glenn

#1010

great job on the Joker, Johan, I am really loving this one… I might play down the detail on the gums above the upper teeth because I think they’re distracting a bit from the teeth themselves, which are wonderfully done…

The eyes and values are fantastic!

#1011

Hey Sabrina, really great to see you at the forum and in my humble thread again
Thanks for the words of praise! Too much learning to do still though…

staticpen Thanks man, not half as awesome as the stuff in your sb!

Hi Annette! Summertime always allows me to spend more time trying other things than the usual academic work… will try to keep the experimenting up even now that school is starting again tomorrow (can’t wait for that though)

Hey Glenn. Thank you. I’m learning heaps with this one and I’ve decided to take my time with it… experiment and try things out… delete if the outcome is crappy and start all over again… the beauty about working digitally, that is! Thanks for dropping a note here!

Hi Del, thanks for the crit on the gums… I’ve lowered the value of the gums for now… not very sure what to do with them actually but will see soon when I start coloring…

Here’s an update… worked a lot on the hair… much trial and error stuff… I wanted it messy but not too distracting, not sure about it at all really… think I might end up adding more highlights as I progress on the piece… I’m expecting a lot of corrections to be made to the values when at the coloring phase… oh well, will see…

My pc almost cracked up on me yesterday when I tried to update my WinXP to SP3. Fortunately I was able to fix it (took me less time than expected actually).
It has to hold until next summer though… can’t afford a new machine now.

School again tomorrow… can’t wait!!

Hair looks really great, man. You’ve done a sweet job of making it look like it’s curling over itself. Looks really legit.

Got any good art classes this semester?

#1013

Thanks Jason.

Got any good art classes this semester?

Well, from now on it will be life drawing from 18h30 until 22hr every Monday and Tuesday until June next year
And I can tell ya it is bloody well needed! Last night was a disaster

I will see if I can arrange to go on Wednesday and/or Thursday if I can squeeze it in…but I won’t be able to do this too often or my girlfriend will put the frying pan on my head in a rather unpleasant way ^^

no images, sorry (at work)

Thanks for the visit and the support!

#1014

Hi there Johan

Wow your stuff is really good. Been paging through some of your work.
I agree with what was said about the hair great job.

I think the way you have worked on the lighting on the face ( the light and dark )
very nicely done. You using reference for that?

:lightbulb
I was wondering aswell, would you not see alittle of the neck?

#1015

So it looks like I have lost all sense for proportion, form and light… well perhaps that’s a bit exaggerated, but after week 1 I had this fealing I haven’t made improvement for the last 6 months or so and I have to be careful not to even go backwards…

Note to self: hang in there buddy! Loads of life drawing sessions ahead so something is bound to happen scratches hair with a ridiculous smile

All my A3 sized drawings are not actually A3. I always have the employee at the art store cut off 3cm off the bottom to have a less horrible ratio.

I have been searching to find all the info about Leonardo Da Vinci and his work as an engineer. I am particularly interested in his vehicles and machines. However, I have not been very successful in my search so far. So if anyone know a book that describes his flying machines, war machines etc in detail, preferrably a large sized book, please post.

Most books about da Vinci focus on his paintings and anatomy studies.
PLEASE? A title of a book or an author could get me going.
This is extremely important to me and any help is highly appreciated!

On a side note, it seems one of my DSF entries from a few weeks back was selected as sketch of the day. Pretty cool! but it’s probably because there weren’t too many entries heh.
It’s this one:

It was done for
CgTalk Daily Sketch 60mn “The Client”

#1018

Here’s another land/seascape study from a while back.
I started of with the intention of working impressionistic… LMAO… huge failure!! so I’m abandoning this one
Will work on impressionistic painting though…

Memorist Thanks! The Self Portrait as Joker is not finished yet
I use a mirror and this one picture from the Dark Knightas a reference.

#1019

And I was just going to ask you when will we be able to see your life drawings and here they are. Some more Hogarth’ish approach might help you with those. By that I mean giving some crisper edges where the form turns. Sort of like in Hogarth’s sketches where he goes with drawings all those boxy shapes. Just a suggestion.
Congrats on the sketch of the day!

#1020

Man, Johan, what a big batch of new material.
I noticed your DSF award recently as I was browsing some recent category winners. Grats.
I can’t say I know of anything specifically dedicated to Da Vinci’s engineering, but there’s a huge book called Leonardo’s Notebooks that covers most everything Leonardo ever wrote, including some of his ideas for machines.

Great life drawings, mate! It’ll be interesting to see what your pages look like at the end of the class when compared to these first poses. Who is your instructor, and do they have a website or anything we could look at?
