Sketchbook Thread of Jenny

#1

My name is Jenny. I’m 20 years old. I’m “new”, even though I made an account some years ago (when I was 16-17?). I thought this site looked neat, I posted some crummy drawings and called it good. I would really love to delve into this site, and take advantage of it. I haven’t been drawing for such a long time.

Now that I'm on my own, I can finally start taking art seriously. I want to be an amazing artist someday, so I'm going to work really hard.

    Anyway! Nice to meet you!

I really suck at necks, tried to figure them out. Just some google image searches.

Bammes skulls. Google image searched.

Heads from imagination.

30-60 second poses

30 second poses.

Study from photo, practicing fluffy clouds -_- 40 minutes

Random head, no refs. 15 minutes?

I learned a lot on the next picture, about color. I was reading Marta Dalhig’s tutorial on noses, so I drew pretty much the same picture.

I learned about contrasts, dark grey looks white next to dark colors. It sounds obvious, but now it clicked. It looks so nice making subtle contrasts.

40 minutes

I realized I needed to study eyes and noses more. But lips especially, but my hand started to cramp up, so I’ll do that later.

Took an hour. I saw an artist that had this idea. I searched nude girl, and got lots of porn images, but they all have such good lighting! And so much skin to paint. I learned a lot, Haha

Photobucket took it down before D: wah.

Mouths… Google images mostly, but found a cool face expression website too.

Andy’s been super sick, so I’ve mostly just been with him.

But here’s some studies. More eyes and heads

Annnd watched Andy play lots of Mortal Kombat, so a Kitana drawing x} Argh, it looks all awkward right now, any suggestions?

#7

I drew today while watching Andy play Mortal Kombat again.

Quick digital drawings.
I really really like drawing quickly I’ve discovered… This was nice to see what I recognized and drew quickest. Super helpful! I know that I need to understand hips better. How that all connects… But I think I’m starting to get necks.

I like drawing quick, but it does look yucky :\ hm. not sure what to do.

Hi JM-Art  Thank you so much. I appreciate that.

Here’s a figure study that turned into some Portal 2 fanart.

love the studies and like your figures’ rendering. keep the good work up Jenny!

Cisc0- Thanks they help so incredibly much. After my other drawing, I knew I had to practice hands more. Blah.

Here’s some more studies and quick gesture drawings.

And here’s an early sketch screenshot of an animationI did for fun.

I’ve been working more on the Link picture. It’s been so much fun o.o (regarding my blog post ajennypenny.blogspot.com)
I’m excited because I figured out some things that makes these kinds of drawings SO much more enjoyable!

-Link’s face in the last post was super rough looking and icky. I started using the basic airbrush brush (0% hardness, pen pressure on opacity, not on size) and it helped so much, it’s crazy O__O I’m going to use this brush so much more now!

-I spent more time figuring out what to do at the beginning. I have a bad habit of rushing into a drawing, but this time it helped like crazy to do all the hard stuff at the beginning.

I just thought I would share what I learned, in case anyone else has the same problems D:

Anyway, I thought I would post my WIP so far. It’s been fun Link in “Concept art style”.
I need some suggestions on the pose, too rigid looking

vvv- After I learned about the soft brush

Very nice…it´s great to see how well, imo, you balance the different aspects of drawing…anatomy studies, gestures sketches, and techniques related to line and color as in the last wip as well as the quality of them…they are veeery good.
About the wip, is very helpful to see this, i realy like this kind of stuff. Maybe as you say, is a little rigid, but i don´t think is a problem, because you are not doing a illustration that is trying to tell a story, you are showing a character design. I´ll just let this one as it is (imo is goo already), and try to make more of this…keeping in mind those things you learned from experience.
I don´t know if you are using perspective for the last character (i think not), but lately i realized that is a very important to set up a horizon line (in other layers as guide at least) and make characters in perspective as you do with a building, etc. Also adding a contact shadow makes the character a lot more believable.

I highly recomed you this tutorials in case you didn´t saw them yet.

Cheers, keep the great work.
