oh my gosh, you’ve been busy! Great job with the studies - I agree that the green one is very nice (assuming you meant you don’t like the color, rather than the drawing?).

I particularly like the she-devil (definite attitude coming through there!) and the angel is nice too, I’m starting to imagine a scene…

Abby

#382

Thanks abby - LOL yeah, that’d be fun!

Sheppard again… I think I’m slowly starting to get the hang of sketching with a tablet… never been too good at it [must be the coordination thing - staring at the screen rather than the hand]

#383

Hi Magdalena… your studies are really cool… getting better with each one!

ya… I am finding it a bit odd, too… mabe the reason why folks pay so freaking much for the Cindiq!

#384

thanks anand!

that’s exactly the reason I bet  I’m not paying though LOL - I’ll learn  - ah, the scroodge in me!

well last thing for today - sometimes a whole load of dots works, I like it anyway  another brainless thingy…

#385

maybe in 20 years, when we wouldn’t have much use for a Cintiq, it will be affordable

nice hips

It’s also very nice to see the variation in color…

#386

Hi Magdalena

Great to see your studies… It’s funny how things pop up in “groups”: - been doing some quick Sheppard studies too, I think more as a break from the OFDW’s slow paced work… I do like his style though and find that with different approaches, you end up taking on board bits from many and making them fit with your own personality or style - or whatever it is  I like the way you’ve been adding imagination to some of your studies! More…
…and that subliminal effect of green… not to be underestimated

take care and cheers
a.

[edit] Pardon I’m a dummy with english… I must rewrite in a more readable way what I wrote.

Is the difference between Cintiq and a tablet belonging only to a eye-hand coordination or there’s a difference in the quick-sketches produced? If yes, can you post them?

#388

Oh I do not have a Cintiq [alas] so I cannot really say from my own experience… My friend’s working with it though [he’s a storyboard artist] and says there’s just no going back to any ‘crappy Intuos’ :scream: once you’ve tried the Cintiq! So I imagine there must be huge difference… Well when you draw with an Intuos you look at the screen and draw with the hand while with a cintiq it’s the same as the sketchbook - you keep your eyes on the pencil… it’s easier… Judging by the quality of sketches Zhu is producing using a tablet I’d say it’s only a matter of practice and like Anand said the price difference is just crazey…

NR43 - lol - that’s what I fear…

Frejasphere - thanks so much - yeah fate it would seem

#389

Thank you very much for the reply  Maybe it’s only a matter of “habit”

#390

well I was supposed to work on my new model this weekend but I faled parlesly! Just could not make myself do it…

I found this picture and it sort of inspired me to do a sketch and once I had that I started playing around with colours and came up with this [yes she’s making bubbles LOL] - I really like it acutally, though it’s another elf/wood creature thingy, and I’d like to render it as a painting - probably will take weeks with my lack of skill but I’m counting on your help here guys! You’ve encouraged me to do a painting so let’s make it the first one… any ideas as to the composition and everything really - feel free to shout

do you think it should be wider?! I have a feeling she’s squashed in there right now :deal:

#391

Hey hey,

I think it’s cool to see you start this new project! One thing I would say is to elongate her torso / pelvis, I think her body is a bit short atm and extending her would make her look more natural. Also it’s safest to shoot your own ref, esp. if ultimately you’d like to display your image in the CGTalk Gallery, which, given the amount of time you are likely to spend on this, you should, unless it’s just for practice. However for a painting that’s only for practice I don’t think that using others’ ref is a problem unless you try to sell the work, in which case you’d have to get the photographer’s permission. All that aside however I really look forward to seeing your progress on this, should turn out to be a great painting!

#392

cheers Becca - I’ll try applying your recommendations!

the photo is a stock photo from Deviantart and the author’s allowing people to use it to make their own artwork so I’m playing it safe :scream: Don’t think I’ll be at the point whe someone’d want to buy it though LOL I’m safe there!

#393

Ooh, that’s good news! You shouldn’t underestimate your skill though, and you never know which painting will turn into a great one - so it’s great to hear you’re playing it safe.

#394

hi, Magdalena,

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this! FYI - there is a CG Society tutorial on composition by Philip Straub that you might find interesting for your questions on placement:

Good luck!
Abby

#395

thnx for the link abby! Well I hope I get somewhere with it and don’t get bored half way though  - which I’m afraid I might do  still it’ll be a good exercise nonetheless, whatever comes out of it…

#396

First of all, this one has got a GREAT atmosphere so the first thing I can suggest you, based upon my personal experience (and so no “fixed” eh), is to save this sketch and look at it, sometimes, when you are polishing and detailing the pic. This will remember you the starting idea and feeling

YES, I think that the canvas should be wider, especially in its height cause now the girl is too centered in height while I think she is rightly placed in the “width”. In my opinion you simply have to add few pixels of air. Thiss will help you with light too

#397

I agree with Serena, more height = more air for your character is exactly what I thought actually

I also agree on Rebecca’s tips on stock image usage. This person you’ve got the stock photo from, has very particular “stock rules”, which are easy to break… (I watch her too at deviantart, although I’ve never used any of her stock.)

I do like the bubble swamp concept and I’m really looking forward to see this piece developing!

#398

Hey Magdalena, GREAT bubble girl! I hope you push this one. I would love to see how far you can go, especially since I have seen the reference-it will give me a greater appreciation for all of your hard work and will also give me a glimpse of how your mind works. I’m also interested in seeing how you approach imagination from a stock photo.

Can’t wait to see more.

-Isaias

#399

Serena - thanks very much for the tips! The saving one’s especially valuable because I tend not to save things :scream:

Johan - Oh I’ll be careful about that image worry not  Definitely won’t break her stock rules…

Isaias - Cheers… I hope I’ll push it somewhere… I’m sort of at a ‘nah’ stage today  which is quick… hopefully it’ll pass so I won’t delete the thing from my drive! LOL

this one is a sketch that has been following me for months after my mother has made a funny remark once… she was hanging out the washing and I was teasing her about something [being my usual sarcastic self ;P] and she said she’ll hang me out with the linens if I don’t shut up - this made me see that boy hanging outside among the linens - with a Rockwell-esque feel… back then i didn’t know how to draw anything of substance - now I thought I’d give it a go… I did research Rockwell’s images to see how he did stuff [I’m such a fan of his!]

anyway here it is - just a sketch but I kinda like it

HANG OUT TO DRY! :scream:

#400

Hey Magdalena! sweet sketch, that one! the Rockwell influence is evident!.. Could you show that vest stretching a bit more? … And I would think his arm pit would hang on to the bottom of the arm-hole tightly because of the weight pulling down.
