Thanks Rebecca. This is a lesson I really must immerse myself in. I’ve gotten a start on reworking the values, but I’m RUNNING OUT OF TIME! I’ll have to see what I can do to get it to some kind of completion this evening (just in time, I hope).
I tried the sphere shading ecxercise here amongst some skull & head construction exercises…

nelchee - I don’t see much “awful” distortion in your stuff. Don’t be so harsh on y’self
I’ve found Loomis’ stuff to be really good for pointers on keeping features all on the right planes and in perspective etc.
NR43 - thanks for stopping by. Understandable, I’ve only been here a short while.
I used to doodle with a ballpoint all the time when I was in school. All my old notebooks and pencil cases are completely covered in mindless ballpoint sketches. I think I got pretty good at it, but I haven’t done it in ages. Maybe it’s time to go back to the Bic! I have been playing with felt-tips of late. I enjoy the boldness and I have been trying to improve my cross-hatching as I go. Pens forgive nothing, so it’s a great discipline. Here are some recent attempts…

(There’s a guy sitting in the car in the bottom left corner… does it qualify as figurative? :))
