Sketchbook Thread of el scorcho

Greetings!
I’ve come up with a new year resolution that I can and will follow through! Developing a modelling showreel. but I have realised over the past few months that I am not confident in my 3d skills mainly due to the fact that I was never comfortable in my drawing skills. It shows in the 3d models that I have done, the proportions of my models are totally incorrect. Not to mention I’m need of honing my 3d skill. so i’ve gone back to basics.

Recently I have been reading Sheldon Borenstein’s see, feel trace, draw it, Loomis’s and Burnes Hogarth’s books religiously to get a better understanding of the human form.

Sorry if some of the drawings are wee bit faint i’m in the habit of drawing with blue pencil.

any comment or crits good or bad appreciated I just want to know what i’m doing wrong!

25th December

Hope everyone had a happy xmas! continuing in my sketchbook trying to get the proportions of the human head right reading burne hogarth 's drawing the human head but I’m still a bit confused as how to measure the proportions and placing the facial features of the head in differing head types ( broadheaded ,etc).

But I do feel much more comfortable drawing heads in various angles after reading his book repeatedly. For a long time I have only been able to draw in the front views and now I discover I was doing it wrong anyway!

Right now i’m looking to do a lot more reading up on facial muscle masses and sketches lots lot more sketches. What makes the jaw move, the eyebrows move and which masses are visible underneath the skin to understand what goes where!

great to see that you are determined to improve! I look forward to seeing some 3d here as well as your 2d drawings  good anatomy studies are helpful if you want to concentrate on character modeling [you haven’t specified which type of modeling you’re into but that’ s my guess :)] ,but I’m sure you know that already  Cheers and keep it coming!

el scorcho,

Good to see you starting up a Sketchbook, and I look forward to following your progress here! I really think the key at this stage is less formal critique and more just encouragement to keep drawing and to keep plowing forward with your sketches. There is nothing that anyone can really tell you that will help you more than to encourage you to continue to practice - the sources you mention are excellent for learning, and doing copies from these sources will serve you well. Looking forward to seeing much more work from you!

Cheers,

-Rebeccak

Hi el scorcho

I agree Hogarth’s book can be a bit confusing at some point.
What helped me out is someone who mentioned I was making the foreheads too big and the facial features a bit too squeezed together…

Hope this helps!

Hello its been a long time since i’ve posted i’ve been wrapped up in study which is no excuse. I happened to get riven phoenix’s structure of man dvd been going through two a day its very insightful but a t times hard to grasp even when its so simpified. on top of that i’ve been looking at the box modeling and rigging techniques its been a long struggle so much I want to
learn but what will benefit me as a character modeller? so far its been fun and a pain at the same time.

But I have got a lot of ideas fdrom the past three months, namely two months I’ve done an advanced development of characters that I have already come up with.

one is a dwarf wrestler called el magnifico I did for my demo reel in 2005 i’ve done advanced concepts for this character because I like this charcter so much.

I love the movie ichi the killer, got hold of the manga which is bananas so I decided to do come up with a concept for a 3d model of the crybaby . The concept is very anime, I think I may steer the concept to a more realistic style.

Heres my progress so far any comments will appreciated

Heres some more screenshots of progress on my model, I’m tryin to get the geometry of mimick the flow of the actual muscles of the human body.
So far the back muscles are an interesting challenge.
