I think you are right about finding that middle ground. I will be posting more on here soon.

Mike,
I forgot to mention, but I did take a look at these yesterday, and as usual, they are fantastic! I am limited in my range of smilies here as I am in Basic Text Editor mode safe for working environments however I can create this fine smiley here which really doesn’t accomplish what I want to express but I’ll also write bounce to signify that you’re doing a great job!
Cheers,

And now for something completely different…
My first (poor) attempts at Loomis drawings. Dont’ worry - they will get better… I think!?

Mike,
Hehe, there is this stupid children’s rhyme, where you hold you smoosh your cheeks together with your hands whilst intoning, “Hi, my name is Chubby…” ~it proceeds from there. This reminds me a bit of that! Just kidding you ~ it’s great to see you get started on your new studies! Which book/pdf are you drawing from, btw?
My hand writing on the top of the image gives it away…
Drawing the Head and Hands - Page 11.
MIKE:)
I just posted this on the 15 minute sketchaton - but am posting it here too. It makes me look like I’ve done more!! LOL

MIKE
Mike,
The body is brilliant! I think you ought to work on doing the full figure, as you’ve done here, and then taking the time to do individual studies of faces, alone, as large as the figure. I’ll post up some guidelines later tonight or more likely tomorrow as I have class (have a little time beforehand so am trying to catch up with the day’s events!)
Cheers,
~Rk eager to see Mike grow those tiny heads! ROFL… (actually, this is probably the most proportional head:body drawing I’ve seen you do) ~Nice work!!!
WooHoo - I’m looking forward to it. Don’t disappoint me now Rk, your on a promise
:deal:
MIKE
EDIT:
I’m going to work my way through the whole “Drawing the Head and Hands” book. So I should get plenty of practice with head studies. There are over 200 (I’m pretty sure there are over 200 anyway,) and you said to me that I should see a difference after that many - so I am going to test that theory out. ROFL…
Hehehe…nah, I figure I’ll just post random spam to your thread until you throw up your hands in frustration and splutter off…Muahahahaha!
Alright, but I’ll be expecting some head / portrait studies from you, Mr. Rollinson…Blarr, it’s a two way street, matey!
I just had to do that first lot of Loomis studies again as the last lot were just so horrible.

And here is a truely terrible life drawing from class today. I decided to post it to make me ashamed of what I’d done, and therefore try harder next time. :argh:

MIKE Bad drawing day
There, there, Mike!
That second figure drawing isn’t too bad ~ but you’re a whiz with a ballpoint pen, do you ever use that medium in your workshops? I think it’s great on newsprint, as you can really start to get some smooth, rhythmical drawings going with that combination of media.
Generally, pencil / charcoal sketches get messy and unwieldy unless used in a certain way.
Cheers,
~Rk has had LOADS of bad drawing days today is having a decent hair day, tho
RK~
I’ve had the bad and the ugly today to be fair - nothing seemed to want to work. But, in my limited experience of drawing… I’ve never experienced a “had drawing day!” LOL. that sounds really unlucky. ![]()
MIKE
Started out as a 15 minute sketch but I lost track of time a bit…  Typical of my day today…

MIKE :argh:
Its just hyper-abbreviated - thats all!! (and I’m a bit dopey… :argh: )
You’re a star for pointing that out Rk!! LOL.
MIKE
Mike,
I think it would be good for you to test out doing some really fast poses ~ as I’ve been recommending to others on the 15 MS thread:
Take 1 Ref. image and do 3 non~consecutive / non~cumulative drawings from that Reference image:
one 2 minute drawing
one 5 minute drawing
one 15 minute drawing
After doing a ton of 2 minute drawings, I guarantee you that your ability to capture gesture and the essence of a figure will improve. I really think that Gesture Drawings are a CRUCIAL component to learning how to draw. I know this is the total opposite approach to the approach of the CGWorkshop, but in truth it is good to have both views at once. I figure that trying a number of different approaches when learning to draw forces you to assimilate these various approaches for yourself.
Definitely try out the 2 minute drawings! They’re actually quite fun and addictive. Some of my favorite student drawings are 2 minute poses.
Cheers,
~Rk
But Becks…
You know I can’t gesture sketch to save my life - I totally suck at it!! (why… why… why… why… why me!!! ROFL
)
