Sketchbook Thread of AnOldFriend

Hello everybody in the anatomy thread forums thing.

My name is Zac and I suck at drawing so I try to do 3d art and digital paintings. I have just recently ventured into 2d digital art (a couple months and about 4 or 5 paintings) and have been working on my 3d skills for about 4 years or so. I have no formal training wich may be evident but hopefully I can get better with all yalls help.

Ok so this first painting is my most recent. I used a celebrity referance, perhaps somebody can guess who she is?

And this painting is one I had started before the first one but I got caught in a snag of where to take it, ie what should be in the background and such.

And this painting is the very first one I ever did.

Any comments on anatomy and whatever are most welcome

Angelina Jolie perchance?!

Welcome and let me say that you don’t suck! We’re all here to learn  I definitely know something about being way better at 3d than 2d and I look forward to seeing some of your 3d anatomy stuff here as well

cheers and keep going:thumbsup:

I wish I could suck like this … ( I never said that … never)

Welcome aboard …

As Magdalena , I’m looking forward for your 3d stuff here !

cheers ,

-Zapan

Thanks Intervain and Zapan for the welcome.

Intervain: Angelina Jolie it is I was hoping I did atleast a good enough job to be recognisable to someone.

I meant more that I suck at drawing with a pencil and all that good stuff, I think I can do cg painting alright, it seems so much easier.

As for 3d work, I do have a couple character models I had done in the past wich i might show, but they are low poly for video game purposes. I will most likeley post mostly low poly character models in this thread but perhaps I can find time to do high poly work too.

I went and did some tweaking to the Angelina Portrait and here is what I got, if anybody has any extra input to make it better I would appreciate it. I redid the hair and touched up the face, eyes, and lips a bit.

Hey there

great to see your thead, and hope you keep posting  I like the unfinished painting, will be exciting to see where it goes. The girl on the finger is my favourite, the way she’s sort of ready to fly off almost

keep it up and take care

The only thing you ā€˜suck’ in is confidence, oh and keep to the 800x800px limit on images

One thing to build on is not just your skills, but your confidence, REALLY try to improve it, or it might hold you back.

Frejashpere: Thanks, I hope to get that painting done some day I just am not so sure about what to do with the background and that. What I have so far was good hand practice and anatomy and such practice.

Fl3wk: I dont think I have a lack of confidence just being realistic I think. I havent really sat down to try to draw with a pencil in a really long time so perhaps I should give it a shot some time.

Well to continue practicing getting things better I decided I was going to do some eye studies. The following 2 I did on Thursday and I think I may do a couple more at different angles.

By the way I used photo referance I found at Deviantart.com … perhaps I should link to the referances?

AnOldFriend,

Welcome aboard! I have been at SIGGRAPH for the last few days, so this is the first time I am seeing your thread. It would be nice if you could tell us a bit more about your art training and background. What sparked your initial interest in art?

I think you have some great skills here and I would like to see you try to do some digital or traditional studies of Anatomy, which I think would greatly help you to improve even further. I don’t know if you’ve seen this thread:
Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 1 - The Head

While the Official Workshop is over (it concluded about a week or so ago) anyone is more than welcome to continue posting to the thread or to simply use the provided Reference at their leisure. I think doing Master Copies is a better way of learning the head than from celebrity portraits ~ especially when you are analyzing a master painting, drawing, or sculpture, there is just more depth to the piece than with a celebrity photograph. That being said, I think that you are doing a great job here, but I think that you would benefit more from doing many studies at this point than from focusing on just one.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Plus: When copying from photos you have to take into concideration the distortion the camera makes when flattening the image, and also the light can play tricks too. Master copies dont have that problem.

RebeccaK: I will try some heads, Dont know if I can do 50 in a month with work and all other extra real life things but I will see what I can do.

As for more background info. Like I said in the first post I have no formal training, the last art class I was in was in highschool some 4 or 5 years ago.

I guess what mainly sparked my interest into getting into 2d digital art was my work in 3d art wich ofcourse requires you to need to be able to paint suitable textures sometimes. As for what started me on the journey of learning 3d art was a game called Morrowind, if it wasnt for my friend giving me that game about 4 years ago I have no clue what I would be doing right now. I do hope to go onto school for video game design and focus mostly on the 3d/art side of things possibly starting later this year or early next year if I can afford it.

Ok so I decided I would stay home tonight rather then run around and get drunk and get into trouble so I decided to pick a face to do and here it is. This took me like 2 hours or so and I dont know who the artist is, I have a guess or 2 but I wont.

Let me know if anything should be done to fix it if you will. I will continue some details if things look alright.

Hi again

Durer’s head is looking good  you’ve captured him well and the only comments I have are that his eyes (particularily his left eye - ā€œlooking atā€ angle) need defining and possibly the line marking the top of his head could be less bold…

Good work and hope to see more

cheers

Hi…AnOldFriend…

Really like the hand with the figures on it…shows you have a great imagination…which is half
of the battle won already…would be great to see you get a thick note book…strathmore paper, and a ballpoint pen,…and just start to draw the visions that enter into your mind.
This exercise will develope your drawing skill, and at the same time free your imagination, and
will let it express itself…Let it run wild and free on those pages.
By the time that notebook is full, you should have the makings of some great paintings.
Do a lot of mastercopies also…best way to hone your drawing and painting skills, and will allow you to express your own ideas and visions with expertise and great draftsmanship, as time goes by.
The key, is to capture those thoughts, visions, and ideas, when they come to you,…if you don’t get them down by drawing them, or writing about them in your notebook when they appear,…they have a way of vanishing like a puff of smoke, and are forever lost.
LOOKING FORWARD to seeing your work, and imagination progress…

TAKE CARE
Glenn

Hello everybody again, long time since I posted her. I been working and really havent had much motivation to paint. I just recently got a Wacom tablet so now I am sorta getting back into the mood. I did a few just practice crap that i never saved just to get familiar with using the tablet and such and now I have 2 pieces i think are alright to show.

This first is a real quick 15 to 20 min sketch I did with a photo as referance.

And this one is a sketch of a chracter concept (just the head for now.) The space in the right will be for the front view. Later i will proly do a body concept for it. I will proly also edit the colors a bit. Any input on either are most welcome.

AnOldFriend,

Nice work, here! If these are your first attempts at 2D art, I’d say you’ve got quite a lot of potential. I like the greyscale painting of the head a lot (the one of Durer- Thanks, Frejasphere!)- I love the feathery, soft and whispy treatment of the hair… very well done . Must agree with everyone else on the Giant Hand painting too- it’s really a lot of fun.

Can’t wait to see more of your work…

Myku Thanks for stopping by and the encouraging words.

I dont have any update to show but I do have a question if anybody would be so kind to help:D

I posted this question in the Photoshop forum earlier but it seems rather empty. Perhaps I can get a faster reply here.

I was wondering how on brushes and some of the tools you set the spacing and scatter? I have read many tutorials and a few of them talk about setting one or the other or both to a lower or higher number. Usually when I came upon this I just skipped it and did the best I could without it but as I see it more and more I really want to know. Thanks for any help.

#17

Hey there. You can set the scatter and spacing in the options found here: CLICK ME

And keep up with the studies!

#18

Thank you Razz for the info.

The following are paintings for the torso workshop. Neither are fully finished but I may come back to them or maybe not, we shall see what happens.

I really like the last image, it feels like its made of bronze. The first one of the girl could use a bit stronger shading if you ever get back to it. Lighting is something that will really enhance your work I think. The eye studies are really good!

#20

Making some steady progress, I see. Nice going! I agree with Womball about the last one- nice ā€œbronzeā€ feel to it. Keep up the hard work, it’s paying off ;).

BTW, do you have any of your 3D stuff you could post?
