Sketchbook Thread of Amerasu

#1

Now that I have some free time, I thought I’d start an anatomy thread

I’m terrible at drawing the human figure from memory and need lots of drawing practice so that it becomes easy, and hopefully, second nature. I’d like to be able to draw quickly without resorting to reference all the time.

I hope to get some figure drawings in this weekend. Now I just need to convince my husband to pose for me

Hi… Amerasu…

Enjoying your thread so far, and your web site also.
Really like your painting style on those blackeyed susan flowers, very nice technique there…
If you are interested in doing figures from your imagination, then you should buy all the
BURNE HOGARTH books you can afford. …DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING, would be my first
selection, if I were you. That book contains all the basic principals of doing figures from
the imagination, and is a must for anyone who is seriously thinking of doing so. It will
really really really help you in your quest for freedom from models. You can get it cheap
thru ALIBRIS .COM or AMAZON .COM …
Looking forward to seeing more of your work…

I second what SpiritDreamer says Dynamic Figure drawing would be an excellent starting place for drawing figures from Imagination,I started my journey with Dynamic Anatomy by the same author!

#7

Perfect, I just ordered Dynamic Figure Drawing from Amazon. Thanks for the tip! It looks great.

I’ve been working my way through some of the anatomy books I have - Giovanni Civardi and Anthony Ryder (who I especially like since I tend to draw the same way with contour lines and then shading). I just wish I could find a life drawing class in my area.

Here’s one I just finished from OFDW 006. One major thing Rebecca’s workshops have really helped me on is colour and shading. They’ve taught me to pay attention to details.

Amerasu, thanks! It’s been great to have you in the OFDWs, you add quite a lot to them! :wavey:

Whoa, this is a beautiful painting! Imo, one of your best ~ the lighting is just beautiful in this piece! :arteest:The one thing that I would say is that his feet don’t feel grounded quite yet ~ but the rest of the figure is just superb!! Brilliant work…can’t wait to see you improve even more!

Cheers,

Yeah, you’re totally spot on about grounding those feet! How did I miss that, lol? He’s practically floating! I’ll have to fix that.

Hi…Amerasu…

Fantastic job on the skin…BEAUTIFUL…

Another book you might really enjoy, and also learn a lot from is…
DYNAMIC LIGHT and SHADE by BURNE HOGARTH…One of his BEST…
Makes me realize how much I don’t know, and how much I need to learn about
light and shade, every time I look at it. One of the most valuble possesions in my
personal library… .
Can’t wait to see your painting tutorial…

My 11 year old daughter asked tonight why I’m always drawing naked people

Anyway, some quick 10 min pencil studies of figures from OFDW011. Not sure which one to paint yet.

#14

Oh yeah, I did actually fix 006 and grounded him with a shadow. No more floating

#15

Wow! I am so impressed! Great work on this. You certainly give me a standard to work towards.

And you mentioned life drawing classes, if you find one PLEASE PM ME ABOUT IT!! Since we are in the same city and all…hehehe.

Have you checked the University of Guelph? I am sure I heard my aunt talking about them when she was a student there. I wouldn’t doubt with their arts program that they would have after hours classes as well…

Also, check with the Big Black Pig studio…that place can be a bit expensive (for my budget…heh heh) but it looks like a really great studio!
We’re looking forward to more of your stuff!! :bounce:

Hi Meredith, I haven’t checked Guelph yet. Hadn’t thought about that but it’s really close so worth a call. I did look into Black Pig Studios too but like you, found it too expensive. Plus she seems to do more abstract art and painting and I’m more interested in straight life drawing. I also tried the KW Gallery of Art and they had some really cool comic art courses but of course, they were only for kids so my daughter ended up taking the classes instead of me. Ah well… she enjoyed it. I told the KW Gallery people we were starving for some life drawing classes but they’re too into painting watercolours, lol. They’re keeping me on a list anyway.

I haven’t looked too hard but plan on it over the next couple of weeks. I think it would be really handy to take an actual life class. I’ll definitely PM if I find anything.

Edited to add - I checked Black Pig Studios and it looks like they have a Life Drawing class now but there is no start date for 2006. $267 for 6 weeks. Kinda pricey for me.

Lovely to see all your work in one place Amerasu, you’re OFDW pictures are espcially good, particularly the one of Ron, the sense of mass in that is lovely, and the shadow is definitely an improvement! Do you find it harder working from life digitally? It’s not something I’ve tried outright, just bits here and there when I need reference for a piece, but it’s usually just placement of features and/or colour. And I can totally relate to the lack of life drawing classes, especially when they are overrun by watercolourist courses… sighs i’d give my left hand for a good life drawing course.

#18

Thanks Zepyhri

Yep, I find digital painting (and drawing) figures from life harder. I think it’s pretty easy from a 2D photo but somehow the colour choices seem harder from life, the contours too… maybe because of all the reflections and filtered lights.

I’ve got my husband posing for me now. Now I’ll have to convince him to let me post them

Damn damn damn fine skin work Amerasu!

I forgot to add this last one for 011. I have a number of pencil life drawings as well but need to scan them first.
