Sketchbook Thread of Alex

Note: I apologize about the poor quality on some pictures. I blame not having a scanner, you should too.

Hi everyone!
Welcome to my scraps & sketches thread. I basically created this thread to keep myself busy practicing painting/drawing, getting criticism & advise and to get my stuff out there!

   A little about myself--
I'm currently 18 years old and am soon to graduate from upper secondary school. Arts have always been close to my heart and especially painting & drawing. I went through a time that I was unable to do anything for 3 years (lots of stuff involved) and recently, a month ago, I've finally gotten past this stage and have managed to get back the inspiration I lost for years.

I'm very eager to graduate and continue my studies at a school specialized to arts. My goal is to become a freelance illustrator/graphic designer... someday.

So, I'll be posting here frequently my studies in hope to get some critisism and advise!

 ---

 And to start things off!

The 3 first are sketched in photoshop using tablet (I'm not quite used to it yet..) and the last picture is a photograph from stuff I've drawn today. (I'm lacking a scanner, I'm working on buying one as soon as I get some money. :))

Hi Alex,

Welcome! I’m glad to hear that you are out of your art slump - believe me, they are common to everyone but the good news is that they are equally commonly ended - and it’s good to see your work here.

I look forward to seeing your progress. I hope that you will participate in the next Open Figure Drawing Workshop.

Thanks SpiritDreamer and Rebecca!
Huge props to Rebecca for everything she is doing over here, thank you Rebecca, I really appriciate it.

I’m so glad I found this place… such an amazing and inspiring place!

Just a small update… because I tried a new shading style!

I’m pretty pleased how it turned out, except the lighting is a bit off compared to the reference picture…

very nice sketches Alex! Nice to see you join in the fun!

not too sure about your choice of photo when it comes to that woman LOL - I’m hurting all over just by looking at her pose

And yet she looks so peaceful… it’s like the sort of position somebody might end up in if they were sketching all night, slid off the edge of their chair slowly, and fell asleep upside down on the floor. You’d be stuck like that for life. Brrrr!

Sketching pencil-style with a tablet, I’ve found, is sortof difficult-- getting controlled tone is pretty hard until you’ve figured out just how to set up the brush. Try some mass modeling with a bigger brush and see how you like that. (the eyedropper is your friend)

Sounds like a plan! I really should start sketching with my tablet as I’m aiming to color/paint with it later on… yeah. I sense woggly sketches coming soon.

Here is a couple hand study from this morning. Time limit of 10-15mins each.

So much to learn… I’ll be doing bones next time - with tablet.

Thanks for comments,
See ya!

 I pushed work stuff for another 1h and concentrated on hands…

I’m starting to get a grip on using the tablet but I still feel like the lines are blurry and too thick… oh well.

Nice to see these studies! A few shortcuts might help your workflow digitally. To change your brush size, use the shortcuts, [ for smaller brush, and ] for larger brush. In Photoshop, Shift + [ makes the brush softer, and Shift + ] makes the brush harder. I use these shortcuts constantly. Experiment and see what kinds of brushes you like best.

great sketchbook start Alex

love that female pose sketch, even though the pose itself looks like it’s only to be done by rubber people

Hi Alex, nice sketches! I really like your shading style on that torso…could be a bit darker in some areas, but it just looks really neat

#12

Thank you.
The shading does look a bit better in real life except it still has a few things off… I tend to rush a bit and not concentrate that much on all the small details… :S

No sketches worth showing today… I was too tired to draw once I got home… been a long day…
Goodnight and I’ll post stuff tomorrow!

Just being me and drooling over hand studies…lol
