Sketchbook and Anatomy Thread of Tom Clive

Nice stuff Tom. I absolutely love you hatching/linework. It’s fantastic, and it seems like you don’t see a lot of folks that can pull that off these days.

Your digital pieces are awesome as well. It seems that they have a bit more depth and value range that some of your drawings on paper do. Anyway, keep it coming, I’m loving this thread!

Cheers for the comments guys ! I haven’t updated enough recently but feel I’m starting to get a better feel for what I’m doing. I just spent a week at LARA in Clapham North, London ( http://www.drawpaintsculpt.com/ ) and learnt a huge amount. The tutors are practising artists who have all been classically trained in Florence and the quality of their work is amazing.

They really helped me understand what I was doing and I think I’ll go back for another week in mid August as I have to take annual leave then anyway. Things I worked on were unifying tones, concentrating on shapes instead of features and working on edges instead of lines.

Here’s a long pose I did whilst I was there:

Oh and proportionally I measure up and try to use sight/size rather than rigidly sticking to head measurements.

Oh and here’s a very quick charcoal sketch but I quite liked how it worked.

The pre-last drawing is good! You are doing it all right. The common problem is focusing on edges, and you seem to overcome this problem. For how long do you learn to draw? Do you study anatomy too?

#65

Thanks Alexander ! I went to Art School a while ago but after I finished in 1998 didn’t do that much for quite a while and headed in a more IT/Coding direction. For the past couple of years I’ve been getting back into it and draw from life at least once a week.

I’ve studied as much anatomy as I can and have loads of books that have helped.

I feel I’m finally understanding what I need to do to improve and now it’s just about putting the theory into practice !

Do you work or plan to work as a character modeler? I was surprised an amateur can become such a good drawer, but considering you have an artistic education, this explains the “genius touch”.

#67

Thanks for the comments but I still have a lot to learn ! I’ve done quite a bit of character modelling over the past 10 years or so and think I have the technical knowledge but haven’t had the patience to bring a project to full completion recently…

I like the term amateur as if you look at it’s Latin roots it means lover and I draw because I love doing it. I think if I was doing something commercially I might lose my enthusiasm for it.

At the moment I’m just trying to get better and will keep on at it !

Another HB drawing ! I gave it to my Mum who’s framing it so only had time to get a quick iPhone pic but I quite like the way it turned out and yep it does look like the model this time !

Here are a few updates ! A little quicker and rougher but here goes:

Cheers Glenn ! I’ve been doing loads of drawing recently and think I’ve loosened up a bit with my style. The more you draw the easier the proportions seem to get so I can concentrate on the tones and atmosphere rather than measuring up when you only have a limited time with a model !

#73

agree with Glenn here, you have really improved, especially like the two longer poses, you are getting your eye in…keep up the good work…

Thanks Kris. Another sketch from this evening. Might tidy this up a bit as there are elements ( like the torso ) I’m pretty happy with.

Did this with a 3B graphite stick on medium weight cartridge paper.

New sketch from today !

Here’s a five min line drawing I did beforehand and I almost prefer it…

#76

Very nice stuff as always Tom. I’d love to see some painting!

#77

Here’s an animated gif of the progress of one of my drawings which pretty much shows the sight/size process I used. I would have liked a little more time on this but then I say that for most of my drawings. As you can see I was having lots of issues with details and some of the face but when I concentrated the focus on shapes rather than features I think it worked a lot better.

#78

Good job! You could make more planes on white highlight areas which could use some subtle shading to reveal the form even further.

#79

Something a little different. A quick charcoal sketch on buff sugar paper.

A couple more !

This was a 20 minute sketch in HB.

And another quick one from the same session. Fairly tricky with the lighting and angle but I quite like the effect.
