Sketchbook and Anatomy Thread of Tom Clive

#21

Hi Tom! Thanks for the reply in my topic, I will see what I can do about those heavy outlines.

About your drawings, they look great, I can see improvement from one to the next, but in some of your drawings I feel they are a little stiff, probably because you put the forms on right angles and draw with straight lines, hope it made sense

Hey Tom, really coming along with the drawing, keep focusing on those lines, feel the flow and rythm of them, the details will come later…

Cheers guys. It’s interesting to go back over your older work to see what works and what doesn’t from a fresh viewpoint.

I’ve had some time to keep on working on some of my stuff recently and am quite pleased with my progress. I feel I’m getting to grips with anatomy and form so will do some exercises combining this with tonal and colour practice. ( Will have to put away Modern Warfare 2 for a while to actually get something done ! )

#24

Managed to get my scanner working. Here’s one I did on Tuesday night. I think I can still push the tones a lot futher to try and create a bit more form but the structures about there ! Oh and of course the face could do with a bit more work and the left thigh/hip area needs a bit more shape. Visually the form’s a bit confusing around there.

Edit: Pfft. Photobucket blocking my images - have hosted on my own site now.

New Year and some new drawings ! Here are a couple of quick ones !

Hey nice life drawings.
Have you tried soft media like charcoal yet?
You’ll find you’ll be able to be less line dependant.

You an also mix media and add a wash here and there to increase depth of forms. It’s also nice to put your figures in a background really quickly. (You can always add highlights later again with white chalk or paint for example)…

#27

Thanks Johan !

Yep, I’ve too much stuff to put it all online but I’ve been playing about with all sorts of media recently. I’ve been trying to get back to foundations with my life drawing to try and concentrate on the anatomy. I’ll post a bit of variety up at some point but here’s more pencil stuff !

#28

Hey Tom - these look great!

You can genuinely see an improvement as your drawings progress. I love the line quality of your last few & I love the study on the chair.

Look forward to seeing more!

Thanks Alex. I’m not too happy with the way the figure sits on the drapery though and have imagined what it would have looked like with more of the model exposed. Maybe this would have worked better ?

#30

Hey Tom! If I can tell you my opinion I prefer the first one you did about this two sitting figures: or better still I would prefer to see more drapery hiding the back of the model (I dunno if I’m explained well)… just for a “better” wrapping sensation.

Btw very cool life drawings. Waiting to see something colored with traditional media

Thanks for the comment and you could be right Cisco ! The 2nd was just a quick PS paintover job to see how changing the composition might work. I think the pose is a little awkward to start with but I’ll bear that in mind for my next sketch.

I think my shading could do with some work to so plan on doing some of the traditional exercises to get in the right frame of mind.

There are some in here that look as though they might be useful. I’ve had this on my shelf for a while but haven’t studied it in detail. Think it’s about time I did !

Same model as before. Thought I’d challenge myself with some foreshortening and am fairly happy with the face. The left breast lacks a little weight but was a fairly accurate representation I think.

#33

Another nice drawing Tom . I like the way you shade the figures with pencil. I don’t want to do the “party pooper”, but I think there’s something strange really in the face: the left side looks quite too large in my opinion and the left eyebrow is larger than the right one and it would be strange if you could saw more the right side of the face during your drawing session (I hope you can understand me because my English is not so clear sometimes).

#34

Hey Tom! Nice drawing … Love your cross-hatching.

#35

No probs Cisco - thanks for the input. She did have plump cheeks though and after measuring I don’t think the actual proportions are that far off. I didn’t have a rubber on me though and think that lightening her left cheek might balance it up a bit ! I’ll agree with you on the eyebrow though - should have picked up on that !

Thanks Anand - am still working my way through your thread - there’s a lot of work there !

Looking at that last pic one thing that I like is the hair which is something I often have probs with.

#36

Something a little different this time. Tried using a male model this week - pretty happy although this pic could have done with a little more time.

#37

Back to basics !

This is a copy of a drawing in a John Raynes book - Faces and Expressions. It’s a cheap simple book with interesting illustrations. Maybe the features are a little sharp but I tend to forget there’s as much variety in shape and structure of skulls as there is to peoples faces. Will keep on practising and hopefully learning. Even just copying someone else’s anatomical onservations helps me with my life drawing and gets me to look at the model in a different way.

#38

Nice!

From my (limited) knowledge, I’d say that the plane of the brow & cheekbones are a little too flat, but it may have been like this in the original… Really lovely pencil work!

#39

Thanks AJ. You’re right though - I bet this guy would have been a funny looking guy if he had cheekbones and a brow like that !

Am just having a go at a skull pic by Giovanni Civardi. He has a lot softer style. I think I’ll go along to the National Musuem at the weekend and have a go at a real skull. It’s been a while since I’ve had the chance.

Here’s a bit from a quick pastel sketch I did this evening (Only have an A3 scanner here). First time I’ve used pastel for a long time ! Better get to the art shop to get some fixative. It’s pretty rough and I would have liked to have spent more time on it but enjoyed it.

Her left shoulder’s too big and it throws off the balance a bit but ah well. Maybe when I’ve used fixative I’ll have another go at it.
