Sketchbook and Anatomy Thread of Tom Clive

#1

Hi Guys,
my last thread was closed because I didn’t update it for 12months. Whoops. Anyway I’ve scanned in some of my latest stuff and thought I’d post it up.

To start with this is a 45 min sketch I did during my life drawing session last Sunday (1st Feb). I didn’t quite get in as much detail as I would have liked but am not too unhappy with it.

I’ll post more when I can !

Hi, great start
When sketching for life, try not to have fear to make mistakes… draw without expectations and you will be able to get a lot more info on paper in 45 minutes soon.

Keep at it!

Cheers. I used to do loads of lifedrawing but until recently hadn’t done much since I left art school 12 or so years ago. In October I signed up for weekly sessions and have been getting back into it every Sunday since then.

I’ve been trying to clean up my lines a bit as I have a very messy style. You’ll see what I mean when I get some more pics up.

Here’s another one ! My sketchbook’s a bit big for my scanner so I’ve taken some pics. I’ll get some more uploaded !

Another 45 min sketch.

And here’s a slightly quicker one:

Good lines! Try to focus more on form. I know it’s difficult, franlky speaking, I was drawing with this line\graphocal approach till the end of the art school… only when I got into 3d I started understanding what structure means, and why it’s important to work with form, mucle and bones. Though, I felt it was important to me untill some point to draw this way, as line is important too.

Thanks for the comments. I think I’m going to agree with you about the lines on some of this stuff. Some are still looking a little stiff.

Here are a couple of more form based digital bits.

I’m just going to keep plugging away at it. Practice is the only way to improve.

Here’s a 5 min warm up but I quite like it.

It all eventually works itself together. Line design and construction in the beginning then shape design and value are added as your experience grows.
Whatever you do, though, just keep consistently at it.

Thanks AztecFireFlower - I appreciate your input.

My proportions are getting better and I know there’s things I need to work on but I think I know which direction I’ve got to head towards to get there. I’m really enjoying getting back into drawing which is of course the most important thing.

#10

Hmm- I think this looks better on paper. I took a photo with my phone and it definitely loses something.

#11

Here’s a quickie. A bit looser than usual !

#12

I enjoyed this one but it was a bit of an awkward pose for the model which she found a bit hard to keep up. The twist of the hip’s a little inconsistent because of this I think.

#13

[b]I’ve been trying a few different things recently. Here are some images from the last couple of weeks - again sorry about the quality of the pics taken with my mobile but I’ll try and get my scanner working again !

I like the loose sketch in post #11

Do more of those if you can.
Also, experiment with different media. It will seriously improve your technique after a while.

#15

Cheers NR43 - I’m trying all sorts of new stuff at the moment. I’ve filled up a couple of hundred page sketchbooks so am getting the practise in.

I’ll have a look at your thread at some point - it’s huge but looking at the beginning and the end your improvement’s been great !

#16

Lovely work, keep it up

That drawing laying near your feet - what technique is it? Looks like something white on black, but it’s hard to tell

#17

Thanks Nelchee !

That one on the floor by my feet is sanguine conte crayon powdered with a scalpel and then rubbed into some fairly heavy cartridge paper. I used a sharpened rubber to draw so yep it is like painting white on black. I think another half hour would have worked well but it looks okay !

#18

A couple more - again taken with camera phone. These are too big to fit on scanner anyway but you get the idea:

This was a 15 minute warm up but I think I’m getting more accurate with quickly getting proportions down.

I spent about an hour on this and am generally fairly happy with it. I might try and develop the shading a bit as it’s drawn on buff paper with a sanguine pencil crayon. I’m thinking of bringing out some highlights with a white conte crayone.

Great to see more life drawings in the anatomy forum… not happening often these days…

Your last drawing, why not going a bit darker here and there?
Remember, it’s just practice… if you screw up, you can always do better in your next drawing

Cheers. Yep, I’ve been trying to do as much life drawing as possible recently and think it’s starting to pay off. It’s easier and quicker to ref from a photo but there’s no comparison to drawing from a figure in studio.
