Well, I was gearing up for DW4 but I just can’t pass this one up.
He-Man was my favorite cartoon growing up and skeletor was pretty
bad-@@$ so I’m gonna take a shot at modeling him. Found some
pretty nice references so I got a an idea of where I’m going with him.

Skeletor
Good luck with Skeletor. I loved that cartoon too and picked up all the DVDs when they came out. They’re still great, incredibly cheesy, but entertaining.
Okay, I starting blocking Skeletor, I
wanted to get the look of a severely starved
human with the dynamic proportions of the
cartoon ( every character was on steroids!)
I’ m happy with the volumes and silhouette so
now I’m going in with some details. Skeletor has
always been one of my favorites and I’ve always
wanted to model him and really detail him up so here’s
my chance. So, now I got detail left then on to armor.

Gonna start detailing the head now.
I built topology rings on the head to block
him in. Now I’m gonna go in and shape up his
face, This part would probably go quicker
if I was using reference material but I’m just
sculpting as i go ( with a mouse at that ). My
idea for skeletor is than he wears a mask instead
of his head actually being a skeleton (how would
he drink?)

Okay, spent about an hour roughly blocking out
his face, again going for the under nourished look
of skin tightly wrapped around bone and muscle.
Now that I got his masses completely blocked out
I gotta pose him before I can get started on any
serious detail work.

Ok, I got him posed up so now I can start on some detail to the main
body. For me personally it’s kinda hard to just jump into Zbrush and pose
a character so I pose a biped in max, export the skeleton, bring that obj
in as a subtool and then pose the mesh using the subtool as a guide.
Time for details!

Okay, got some good sculpting in and I pretty much have his head
worked out, now that he’s posed I can go in and add details everywhere
I need. I wrote a little back story for his design so it can make some sense.
I’m trying to treat this as if I were re-making the cartoon and I could really
totally re-design it G.O.W./ W.O.W. style. Crits and comments welcome!

Working with the sculpt more now, laying in
more muscle structure in areas. Gonna try and
flush out the body pretty quick because the armor
will be a lot more detailed than the main figure. But its’s
1:26 in the morning so I’m going to sleep.

looking great, love the head,a diferent look ,its neat, looking forward to updates,
cheers
Awesome concept work. Great style. This is gonna be one that is worth really watching.
I like your original man-with-mask approach and that backstory rocks. Looking forward to see what you are going to come up with with the rest of him.
The facemask has an open mouth so he can drink?
Feck me, this Skeletor version is also looking awesome. I really wish I invested some time getting past the UI of ZB.
Looking forward to seeing this come along
Ah, I gotcha. I was reading your backstory thinking… Eh? When did Skeletor do all of this. Model is cool looking though its hard to envision him without a skull face.
Great work!
Thanks for the replies guys,
Concerning the face, He will have the classic
Skull face, it will be a helmet like mask that is
worn over what u see so far.
Ok, Started to work on the arms, they’re
almost finished and then I’ll move onto the chest and back.
The arm with the rocky design is the only arm he can wield
his sword with so I thought I would treat it differently, break
up the symmetry.
C&C Welcome.

Breaking up symmetry is good
Although the only thing that reminds me of Skeletor is the Icon on your pictures, the overall model is looking great so far.
On the last shots, his arm (the one without the rocky design) looks a bit thin compared to his shoulders and neck.
Great work!
