Skating and falling through the floor?

#1

Hey

Im wondering if anyone can help me with something im sure is obvious!

I’ve never really progressed with animation because i dont really know the lingo for certain things and in turn cannot find what im looking for in a tutorial!

Can anyone link me to a video which will explain how to make a constraint that will stop a characters feet from going through a flat plane? If i use max’s biped, i’d like it so when i pull the torso down the knees will bend etc (do i need to look into IK for that?)

Cheers

select 1 leg and set a planted or sliding Key do the same with the opposite leg.

hey!

I understand the process of animation, i just dont know how to stop my characters feet when they hit a surface… if you know what i mean?

Sliding and planted keys are what youre looking for... trust me ;) Im an animator that learned to animate with the biped :stuck_out_tongue:

When your feet hit the ground right click on the leg and select set sliding key ( I dont have max open so it can be something slightly different)
A sliding key will force the feet to act like an IK rather than being influenced by the Bip001

Planted key are the same than sliding key but the difference is: the second planted key WILL ALWAYS be same as the first key. Planted key = sliding key with same as previous key option checked ( once again not quite sure of the exact terms)

When your feet leave the ground switch back to free key

There you go

Wow, its that simple!?

I dont have time right now to be playing around with this, but i will give it a go the second i do!

Thanks for the tips - i’ve bookmarked this incase i need to come back and ask more questions!

Cheers

decided I couldn’t wait to try it and gave it a go! The right click, set key is greyed out, but if i go into the motion tab and do it from ‘key info’ i can set it there and it works perfectly!

Thats fantastic. That simple little thing has been on my mind for the last year or so. I didn’t have a clue what i was to look for or where to find it either.

I even boycotted a degree show project because i thought there was allot more work involved in animating a biped! doh!

Thanks for the reply, you’ve opened allot of possibilities for me!

my bad forgot this step, you’re right you can’t access it if the motion tab isnt open. You can also change to sliding/planted/free key in the key info tab of the biped motion tab

have fun animating
