Sintel training dvd?

#1

Hi, i’m thinking of purchasing the Sintel pre-order dvd set:

I wondering if anyone has purchased previous dvd sets and how the training portions are?

Are they more making of style training videos? Do the artists make these videos during production of the short film? or after?

I am assuming they will be geared towards blender 2.5?

I’m wondering how the training portion compares to some of the dvds out there.

Thanks,
George

I think the movie DVD has some training, usually about features that have been added during the production, but nothing extensive. As far as I have seen they have just been more content on the making of the production. That being said, they may have some good training on the Sintel DVD.

As for training, I think blendercookie.com is a valuable resource. They are in the midst of a download only training series that is quite extensive in 2.5.

You can check out other tutorials on the site to see if you like the style. The 2010 blender training above is more advanced and in depth than these getting started videos though.

Blender open movies (and games) are “open”, so you can download them freely with ressources and see by yourself, pre-order or just order DVD is helping Blender Foundation for current or next project (hiring more devs and artists!)

I’ve bought all of the training DVD’s and projects and I think I learned the most from Andy’s DVD
http://www.blender3d.org/e-shop/product_info_n.php?products_id=105

and secondly I learned a lot from Pablos DVD:
http://www.blender3d.org/e-shop/product_info_n.php?products_id=118

Andy’s Creature factory steps you through the creation of an epic project whereas Pablos is a collection of shorter movies demonstrating how to use smaller features within blender. Both videos are for 2.49, but directly relate to the toolsets in 2.5 - the tools are just in different places now, but work very similarly. Both DVD’s include all of the source files so if there is something crazy you are trying to figure out, you can just look at the blends.

As an example, these character are all on Pablo’s DVD (Hell, you can download some of the blends on his site):

I think there will be plenty of learning from Sintel, but the focus tends to be on the movie instead of the learning on the Open Projects - once you are up to speed you could probably look at the source files and see what is going on, but you would need to know the basics first.
