I’ve got a good size fire that should be lighting some geometry. Usually I use either a point light or a couple spot lights to fake it but I’m wondering if there isn’t a better solution. Final gather kind of works. Perhaps if I could boost the FG contribution but I don’t see any options for that under the mental ray rollout.

I could have two render layers. On one layer primary visibility is off and the incadesence is jacked up for FG then a second layer with the ordinary fluid. This doesn’t not seem ideal though.

not sure if you can do this in mental ray but in vray you can use a piece of geometry as a light source.
Could you output your fire fluid as a mesh, shade that using the built in fluid texture to mesh and hide the source mesh to get your lighting?
