simplify and adjust repeated motions?

What I have

I have a scene with several repeated motions with simple 2-3 keyframes that loop. Examples of this include a heart that scales up and back to normal, some pistons that change positions with an endomorph - 0%-100%-0% and some gears that rotate.

Rather than having hundreds of keyframes, I have obviously just set the pre and post effect to repeat. So over the course of the animation the various elements chug away happliy.

What I want

I would like a way to control the speed at which these elements move over the course of the animation. As an example, I would like to be able to move a slider or null and have the pistons move faster, gears rotate faster etc.

I would guess that I would need some way of linking the position of a null or similar to the distance between keyframes? Is there a motion modifier for this or an expression setup that would offer this functionality?
