Simple (?) question: Modeling a 3d Pac-man - with animatable mouth?

#1

Hello Maya folks!

Please forgive this very simple question. I’m an animator and not a modeler: Is there an easy way to create, essentially, a sphere with a wedge cut out so that I can animate the angle of the wedge?

Or, put a different way: Is it possible to cap off the “hole” in a NURBS Sphere so that the sphere looks complete while I’m animating the sweep to different values?

I find that I’m really stuck on this one, and any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

There is a bunch of ways to rig this from a facial rig OR blend shape methodology in the classic sense… .

BUT… if you have a render engine that supports render time booleans you could animate a wedge where the mouth would be creating the open and close look without worrying about the sphere distorting.

Thanks for the response. I think this may be a little above the sophistication that I’m looking for.

Essentially, I’m just trying to create the attached image, so that the spheres and cylinders can animate opened and closed.

I keep getting most of the way there, but the insides of the spheres and cylinders remain “hollow” instead of appearing “solid” or “capped.” Does that make things easier for me? (Or am I looking for something more complicated than I realize?)
