Showreel

#1

Hi Guys,

What should I put in my showreel? If i’m trying to show character body movements and basic foundations.

Acting (preferly without sound but with sound can do as well), weight actions (not necessary a lift cause we’ve all seen that before… :)), thinking characters (goes a lot into acting, show their reactions to a situation and try to have an obstacle that they’re trying to overcome…)

I think things that aren’t considered “exercise animation” such as a box lift, walk cycle (cycles in general), jump an obstacle etc is what you really want on your reel. If you can do a good acting sequence you’re most likely able to do a walk cycle too. Emotions, obstacle situations and feelings is the most important thing to have on a reel if you want to stand out of the crowd.

I personally would like to see both mechanics and acting on a reel. If they are combined into a piece with two characters interacting, then that shows you can do both. I’ve seen animators pull of an emotive scene (waist up), yet not be able to do a good walk cycle (and vice versa). If you can show both in an interesting/memorable situation, then great!
