Short Film: TimeOut

#61

Thanks,

I really mean that.

The idea is some what easy, evident by the amount of entries in this forum. Bringing the idea to life or to completion is hard. Sometimes I wonder why not just quit-- start something new or focus on my full time job. I guess it’s something my teachers at Calarts said during my review that is sticking “you’re a good story teller”. I do enjoy the process it’s a little different in a collaborative environment. I’m depending on people so commitment and time is relative. The plus sides in a forum like this you see the pain, struggle and reward of everyone else.

Where am I going…?

Psyk0, yeah I will keep preserving.

Thanks, I hope so!

As usual, I welcome any comments.

Thanks.

So how far are you and what is left on your “to do” list ?
What areas do you still need help ?

#63

Hey BOY1DA,

Scene one: animation is done. Enviroment is 90% done (just little loose ends). Lighting is being worked on. music is being worked on. Sound is going to be worked on.

Scene two: animation has not started. Enviroment is built starting to be textured. Light test has started. No music or sound until animation is finalize.

Scene three: animation is a 1/4 done. Enviroment is 30% done. Light test has started. No music or sound until animation is finalize.

Scene four: animation has not started. Enviroment is done. Lighting is done. No music or sound until animation is finalize.

The areas I still need help in is Effects and props.

Do you know anyone?

BOY1DA, your Fetch project looks fun.

As usual, I welcome any comments.

  Thanks.

I wish I could of helped more with the technical stuff but I’m not a Maya user.
So that limits me to modeling, and I’m not so much in the mood to model.
But if you can think of anything small that I can help with let me know.

You should keep posting concepts of the props you need.
modelers can jump in as they see something they can do.

See ya around, it’s looking good, I luv the outfits for your lead character.

PEACE !

Here are some rendered pics. My friend Rhiz and Jason (fish) started the modeling and texturing. I lit the scene and redid some UV maps and modeling. It took a long time get it here. Lighting is not as straight forward as live action or 2D. There are alot of buttons in 3D (lots). I’m rendering an animation test. I hope that goes well.
Enjoy!

As usual, I welcome any comments.

   Thanks.

The texture work looks great.

You may need to do a bit more work with the lighting.

Off the top , I can see that everything looks a bit flat,
shader wise you need some more specular highlights on some objects.
Like the fridge and stove or the bucket. Everything looks like it is made out of the
same materials,like cardboard.

An even bigger issue is that the lighting has too much dark areas.
I’m not sure if you are using bounced light like a “GI” render.
If you take a look at the last image for an example.
The beam at the corner of the door has a really dark shaded side
almost black, light should be bouncing and hitting that so it is not so dark.

Global illumination can help to fix this but that is not the only way to fix
it you can cheat it too… you can use a colour other then black in you ambient shading,
or you can use a omni directional light with no shadows set at a low setting
to flood the dark areas in the room …

I don’t now if that helped or was clear enough, to understand ?

Good work none the less.

All I can say is you are right. There is no contrast in the lights and color of the lights. Things are as flat as my left foot.

I started using Final Gathering it looked great until I rendered things moving. Then I switched to GI which works a lot better and more predictable.

Back to the drawing board. I have a friend that said he might be able to help. I hope so because I want to go back to animating.

Thanks BOY1DA, sound advice.

Overall you can tell you did a ton of work. The one thing that usually is wrong is texture scale and you got that right on everything I can see. I agree with Boyda you need spec. For next time, the best way to set the specularity is to set your surfaces while they are pre texture/gray as it’s aseier to see how much you are adding. you can obviously still dial it in now without going back… So#1 need speculrity, and some reflection (stove glass for ex).

I’m not sure what overall mood you want, but if your set is supposed to be dingy and dirty then you acheived that. One thing that isn’t consistent is the amount of dirt (Fridge, stove, floor etc) and the neat arrangment of the room…I would expect that if someone had that much grime running down the stove and fridge there would be a pile of garbage bags in a corner and alot more disarray, wear and breakage.

The lights- There seems to be a window throwing some sunlight into the room but isn’t reaching the middle of the room and leaves a huge shadow under the table and appliances. You could maybe let this light come in a bit more. But again, if you are shooting for this look you are in the right area and n that case you only need o tweak the falloff on some lights maybe. And add the sepc to the surfaces. Oh, and that cereal box seems to have a spot and some self illumination on it ?..stands out a bit much, but again that is maybe your aim.

Keep up the great work, you’ve come a long way :buttrock:

I’ll explain the purpose and mood of this set.

This scene is where the kid gets in trouble. He sneaks under his mom’s nose to get to the cereal box, where his favorite character is. The Corner is where he spends his time out.

The Mood is dark and dirty because I wanted a visual reason for the kid to go into his imagination. There is no window because in his imagination he will be outside in the bright sun (kinda).

I hope that makes sense.

softdistortion-

Thanks for the feedback it confirms some of my thoughts.

Rock on!:buttrock:

After my last post and some good feedback. I realize I needed help. So I enlist a friend to help. I really wanted to get back to animating. Here are some sample of lighting that he came up with. Can you see the difference

Since he started lighting I was able to animate.
This is the first shot in scene 2 where the kid starts his time out.

As usual, I welcome any comments.

hey, nice update. The light does look more real and makes the whole room look better. The variations all look pretty good, cept the blue maybe.

observations- your main light source physical location doesn’t make sense …It’s a dead corner in your last pics of the room. I would expect a light over the sink or coming in from a window.
The second light coming in from the doorway to the kitchen adds interest. However there’s something wrong with surface attributes and maybe the polys on the valance that this light is hitting in the kitchen, near the ceiling.

Overall it’s a nice notch up in light quality… it’ll look killer with a few minor tweaks . :buttrock:

your animtion looks really nice btw

#72

Yea, the lighting is an improvement, maybe you need a light fixture over
the table on the ceiling, to give the impression that that is the main light source
for the room ?..

#73

I haven’t posted in awhile… I been animating and some tech stuff. I’m close to blocking out all of scene 2. Here are two shots that are farther along. I would call this a first pass.

Shot1

Shot2

I’m glad to see how busy this forum is getting.

BOY1DA, softdistortion thanks for the critique. Changes are being made as I type. Your projects are looking great.

As usual, I welcome any comments.

#74

I tried to work as much as I can during the holiday but the power of the turkey was overwhelming but I will prevail. Here are some shots from scene two.

As usual, I welcome any comments.

#75

waaaa…can’t see your images.

#76

Nothing like some good animated action.

Nice update, the robot looks much better model wise then I remember.
Did you improve that model ? Are you going to make some nuts and
bolts fly off the robot when he hits the wall in shot 12.

Softdistortion is right the images don’t show… but the links work fine.

LATER.

#77

Anybody out there with some sound effects skills that can help out? Any skill level. Pretty please :scream:.

BOY1DA- I wish I had time to animate on Fetch. It’s looking good.
No, the robot hasn’t change. If I have time maybe I would add nuts and bolts flying.
