Short Film: Digital Glass & Set Extensions

Well, yeah, the composite is pretty resolution independent. But the sourcefiles you posted were 720x576, and thus, so is the final composite. I only letterboxed the image a bit just to get good alignment with the woman’s reflection. The woman and her reflection being from different points of the footage, her reflection was shorter - she gets abruptly cropped off as I had to raise it up a bit to get the eye level to match. And also to get a good visual composition of the end result.

But if you have higher res sourcefiles, I can put the still frames back through the composite grinder. No problem there.

Would it be better if I sent you a DVD with all the files on?

Transfter through the net is no big thing for me, I think I’ve got enough bandwith for it. But if you want, I can take a DVD as well if that suits you better. Of course, you’d had to pay for international shipping - I live in Finland.

I think its safe to assume PAL is all your going to get, plus I see you have the letterbox hard matted in…

As wizdoc said, its a different ball game working with moving images as opposed to just one frame, so that has to be taken into account, especially with regards to the key.

I did offer my services, so if you still want to send the material to me, aswell as to others, then its all good.

No probs Ross, most of the still images are on this forum at the mo for testing. I’m editing the scene at the moment so when I complete it in the next few days I’ll send it to you on a DVD with my pending mattes. The widescreen matte actually comes from the lab. Because we filmed Super 16mm, they did that when the film was processed and telecined.

I think my sequence might be setup wrong as the resolution is a little bit poor when I export tiffs (either that or the tiff export is rubbish) - I captured the footage at 8-bit uncompressed.

Cheers Ross. Darrell

(Where do you live again?) Just so I know where I’m gonna be sending the DVD’s.

I’ll pm you my address Darrell …on the subject of your stills, I can easily enough just export my own from the qt to work with.

Helloooo again people (long time since i posted to this thread - about 30 mins i think) :argh:

Thought I would keep everything running in overdrive by posting stills from the other green screen shots involving the psychiatrist. The background that will be placed behind her is a simple white/grey wall with some degree/education certificates on the wall (this background has not been created yet).

It is well noted that Production Design made a huge balls up of dressing our office set. If anybody feels like a challenge (aka, create and rotoscope some new layers to make it look a bit more professional then I will be forever in your debt!!!)

I have also posted some general stills from the films rushes so you can see the stylistic quality of the film.

Thanks everyone. Darrell :bounce:

IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS VIEWING THESE IMAGES, IT COULD BE A DATA TRANSFER/BANDWIDTH PROBLEM (THEY SHUT OFF FOR ABOUT 30 MINS IF THEY ARE VISITED A COUPLE OF HUNDERED TIMES WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME). THE UNCOMPRESSED FRAMES ARE THE REAL KILLERS!

#26

Hey Darrell, how you tackling the lens shadow?..its really the kinda balls up you could have done without.

…did you get some film weave on this?

Speak later.

#27

Tell me about it (major cinematography balls up). The camera was adapted for Super 16mm but the zoom lenses were a problem when we used them on the modified camera. The D.O.P wasn’t suppose to go 100% wide as we knew we would get a shadow. He thought he was safe, he was wrong!

For the non-green screen images I’m going to have to try zooming in a few percent in the online edit. For the green screen stuff, we’ll have to rotoscope or track matte around those areas etc… With a bit of brain pain, I can have the green screen shots fixed by the end of the week before sending out the DVD.

Speak soon Ross.

Another challenge (WINDOW SHOT):
Anyone out there capable of doing some sort of rain meets window collision? I think this plate would be beneficial to make the shot more realistic. Maybe add a glare on the left hand side of the composition as well, to highlight/simulte a window (that isn’t actually there).

Thanks.
Darrell

Those bad areas on the greenscreen stuff won’t matter, they’ll all be garbage matted out. With regards to the rain, I’ll have a look into that also…

You are a true action hero today Ross.
Keep up the good work!

Those greenscreen shots which have set elements present, I shall have a crack at removing the bad areas - if the camera move isnt too drastic of course.

#32

Yeah, I understand… I’ll get some sleep in a minute and then when I awake, I will crack on with editing the sequence together so I can get this DVD to you guys ASAP. I might send the uncompressed video material and the edited sequence on DVD and then post any Mattes/backgrounds on the web. Otherwise you will be waiting for about 5 days for the mattes before I send the DVD.

G.Night everyone, I am officially knackered
Catch up with you guys 2moro.

Hello everyone… back in business. I will start sending the DVD’s to you people on Thursday morning so if you are in the UK you should have them by Saturday morning and those international super stars should have them soon after.

Artistic License:
One thing that has been brought to my attention on the composite is that the reflection is too far to the right. It looks as if the window is slanted and not straight across. If we can alter the perspective of the background so it matches the reflection that would be great. Otherwise the shot will have to stay flat and boring and move the reflection a little to the left. This can all be experimented with when you recieve the footage.

Also I think we should have some sort of light source reflected in the window (maybe a strip light) these are all finishing touches that can really sell the shot. (Contributions from anybody on this element would be v.helpful). We also have a guy in the UK called Ian who is going to do some Rain Collision so it looks as if rain is boucning off of our window.

Cheers. Darrell

PS: if anyone disagrees with the DVD idea and thinks FTP would be better, let me know. I haven’t used FTP before but you could explain it to me pretty quickly, im sure. :buttrock:

#34

I did composites of the two newer images (the psychiatrist office). They’re attached.

The background office is of course again a temp photo swiped off the net. The back of the hair still has a slight fringe, and I’m not certain how the whole thing looks in motion. I didn’t touch the furniture either. But again, this gives a general picture of the result.

Also, shouldn’t we divide the shots between the people, who tackles what? I think multiple people doing the exact same shot is a bit counterproductive.

#35

Too true WizDoc… Can everybody involved please post what they want to tackle technically (Mattes, rotoscoping, keying, colour correction and so on). That way we can divide the work to suit your area of expertise.

Thanks.

Nice images Wizdoc… I cant wait to get the uncompressed footage to you.

Hello again, I forgot to do this (List of tasks):

Emily standing in front of window:
Background cityscape Matte
Moving cloud (particles?) for cityscape matte
Compositing
Rotoscoping/Garbage Matte (Vignetting)
Motion Tracking
Colour Correction
Basic Rain Particles

Background wall matte (with certifcates on wall)
Compositing (static shots)
Rotoscoping/Garbage Matte (vignetting)
Colour Correction

Hi WizDoc. What do you think to removing the book case from the office shot? I think it looks way too cheap to be in that office and it is also in the most ridiculous place too. The Psychiatrist is sitting approx 2 metres away from the wall and the book case is right next to her. In reality the book case would be resting against our background, so I think it should get the chop. You?

D

#38

I think it should be pretty painless removal. Depending on how much the actress overlaps the bookcase and how much there is camera movement.

If Ross doesn’t mind tackling on the window shot, I can work on this. Considering this shot(s) has only one animated element (the greenscreen footage), there isn’t too much data to be transferred. Would save you from shipping a DVD. Of course, this depends on how long the shot is.

#39

That sounds cool…

First of all, I must post this image (it is a bit of an on-set plan).

I’ll wait to see if Ross is interested in tackling the window shot and then we can arrange sending the Office scene to you. I can upload it tomorrow evening but… I need to know how (remember I havent used FTP before). Not too sure on file size (but i’m sure it will be about 600mb). The office scene is also a static shot and Sasha hardly overlaps the bookcase once.

Cheers Wizdoc.

The window shot was the first one I was going to make a start on anyway, so yeah, thats good.

Darrel, you can still send me the stuff I mentioned, just so its there If I need to get at it…

Later.
