Shoring Edges: Cylinder with Rectangular Channel

#1

Greetings,

I am having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to shore up the edges on this cylinder with a rectangular channel cut through it. The edges of the channel must remain crisp when I convert to Sub-D mode. Any ideas?

A 12-sided cylinder top and a 20-sided cylinder bottom to take account of the extra edges caused by extruding the edges.
Then of course some tweaking

Peace

Oooo…that’s good. Best solution I’ve seen so far. Are you getting flat spots under the rectangular channel? Or did they go away after some tweaking?

Thanks for the reply!

You can use “Edge Weighing” tool in modo - you won’t need extra edges for sharp geometry. Just select edges which you want to be sharp and find “Edge Weight” tool in menues or something like this. Then click to “turn on” the tool and set ‘edge weight’ to 100% in tool properties window. voila!
