Thanks SD. Realflow is what Im using for the liquid sim so the object is a fill mesh I created in LW, I will experiment some more. I tried doing it in LW but it just wasnt working. The anim actually starts with a close up then the camera pulls back. The Shirow logo is not actually reflecting on the surface but I actually planar mapped it.
Shirow Project Book#3 Side-Mission
I wondered if that was RF. Looks good in the sim.
If you composite the logo using the rendered water as a displacement map, you might get some pretty cool text warping fx. Might be worth a try when you are ready…let me know if you want to give it a go.
…Should have our next release item ready for the public some time this week…
This upcoming release feels like it may be a fitting point to schedule a break for the team/project. So, after that it will probably be slow as far as updates…at least for a while.
it’s pretty easy to do if that’s what you mean. Just render the scene (*render buffers seperately for the water) without the text and we can add in in later with. ![]()
Anytime is fine…just let me know if you need anything, or when you are ready to comp.
I am all to aware that I’ve not been “active” lately, suffice to say, things have happened which mean I don’t have much time for the Project.
The difference this time, they are GOOD things and let’s just say, all that heartache in MB looks like it may actually pay off.
Finally got to doing that demo of the MotionBuilder realtime animation controls Boy1da and others were curious about. HERE 3 MEG DIVX
Man that looks like too much fun…
I’ve played with real time controls in max a long time ago.
But never used it for anything but always wanted to use it again one day.
Just waiting for the right time to try it out again.
Now I’m curious how you made that video showing
the use of the keyboard at the same time as the screen capture …
Did you just shoot it and re-sync the video footage ?
Top notch stuff !
Thanks guys.
It was a ton of work to set this rig up.
Thanks again to Colkai for giving help with bone rotations on LW8 during the skinning work and Donshole for the MB devices setup and animation work :buttrock:
Re the demo. Both parts were shot together running a screen capture app and a camera for the keyboard shots.
hi guys
great work as ever, couple of questions / points?!
1/. love the water render … awesome
2/. love the realtime rig … amazing
3/. did you do the stuff Kirt suggested and make the frontpage? (hope so)
4/. love sllinks demo too
keep it up guys
hi Jayreef.
Thanks for the comments.
re Kirts suggestions…some of the things he suggested were already in place…I didn’t set up another host for the clip since Kirt seemed to be the only one who had problems viewing it.
It’s been a while since I paid this thread a visit. Just sending a big shout out to all shirowproject and collab people. Hope you’re all alright and wishing you the best.
Yep, still kikin it. :wip:
Hope the rest of the crew is still ok too.
On this end…continuing on a break from the main shirowproject work… for a change up, I’ve joined in on a texture challenge over at the spinquad forum.
The other team related item I’ve been busy with is detailed in the next section>
===========================
Yesterday I finally received something that was due to be announced last week.
I’ll try not to get to exciterated about announcing this, but I think it’s a pretty big deal…it turned out even better than I had hoped…
What is it???..
remember back in Dec Zem made a comment about turning our history as a collab into a book…well, it’s done!
I was working on another project with a printer, so I figured it wouldn’t be too much more work to collect our images and a bit of behind the scene info for a shirowproject collectors edition book…All I can say is it was worth the work.
The result is’shirowproject DATABOOK1’…
I tried to keep the layout appealing and included extras to keep it interesting. As far as the quality of the book itself… I think I can safely say you will be blown away .
it looks as good as anything you could buy at a book store.
I think some people might like to have a copy of the book, so it will be offered to the public. *Just to get the questions sorted- This is a nonprofit book and will sell at cost, plus shipping.
I’m hoping to pull some extra $$ (from my own pocket) to send a gift copy to some of the core members that I have an address for.
Still need to set up an order page for the public.
So what’s in it?
160 pages - that’s twice as thick as a 3Dworld magazine.
12 chapters >
1- The Fuchi Set
2- Mission 1
3- Side Mission 1
4- Towers and Dropships
5- Concept Sketches
6- Construction Zone
7- The G-Man
8- Cellshade
9- Character Building
10-Multipass Compositing
11-Hypernotes
12-Bonus Tutorials
*also include is the entire condensed history, timeline history and FAQ written by Colkai.
Pretty well every image ever created by the team is in there.
I also included some special info on the texture painting, and a walkthrough of the fuchikoma compositing method used on our animation clip.
The How to of our Fuchi stealth mode is included along with a download link to the Photoshop layers file.
In other words, you can take it apart and look at how it works.
*no cellshade info for this one if you are wondering.
Some pics of the book>

Judging by past experience I don’t think there will be a huge demand, but if you can afford it, and have even the smallest interest, I would suggest you grab a copy while you can. :wip:
*Again, This is a nonprofit book and will sell at cost. $33.95 plus shipping.
Excellent idea SD!
I guess we better get working on volume II soon
.
I cant speak for others but I can say the project has taught me a lot along with you and the crew. Creating a project book in and of itself can be considered a completed project. Congrats and thanks for all your time. (Is the house done yet
)
p.s. Im still here and working
Looking good, must of been lots of extra work to layout.
This project would of made a nice graphic novel too…
Seeing that it started off based on still images from one.
That will be a great thing to give the team members, very good idea.
thnx guys.
I forgot to mention , was planning to prepare a medium rez, online version of the book for people who don’t want or can’t afford a printed edition.
After that I’ll be trying to get some of the team back into action and try to recruit 1 or 2 advanced LWrs to help in the next leg of the finishing work we have to do. :wip:
 That was seriously fast! The book making I mean. Looks excellent! ![]()
Speaking of getting back in action, I’m avaliable and ready as of March. Currently doing a freelance gig, building two characters and a couple of other things for an interactive teaching game about dementia (About 110 hours of work) so February is filled with work since I still have a regular job. Once the NDA clears I’ll post it in a thread somewhere.
