Setting up a Phoenix FD water plane on an already existing plane

Hey everyone, still pretty new to Phoenix FD, but I have a short animation of a small boat on the ocean and just wanting to find out the best way to use Phoenix FD to create a more realistic scene, giving the boat bow waves and a wake.

I’d set up a large water plane (to give the illusion of size) with a matte painting in the background, the plane has various displacement modifiers on it and is very large, so I was hoping there might be some easy way of converting only a small part of the original plane to have water effects?
