Senzafine - looking for critique

#1

Hi I recently painted this and I’d love to hear any suggestions on improvement before I post it on my online galleries ^^ she’s called Senzafine and she’s meant to be a fantasy/magic psychic type character. Thank you in advance.

Sorry if its a bit big XD

It’s overall a bit too blurry. The hair also feels less polished compared to the face, giving the impression it’s unfinished/messy in some spots (rather than looking like expressive brushwork). The neck/shoulder area is very blurred, but why?

When artists use blur to convey z-depth, it’s important to think about why you’re doing it. A painting is not a photograph that depicts the way camera lenses can only focus on one focal plane. The way a human being looks at a scene is different from the way a camera looks at as scene. We humans don’t rest our eyes at one focal plane and take the entire focal plane in–we can only focus on small spot in the entire scene, and in order to take in the detail of more of the focal plane, our eyes must dart around and scan everything on that focal plane, and we can also instantly focus further or closer and take in details in other focal planes in the z-depth.

So ask yourself–are you trying to paint as if it’s a camera lens looking at the subject, or a human being looking at the subject?
