Sentinal Protection issues w/PC

#1

I a Mac Lightwave user, but my wife has a perfectly good PC here which could be earning its keep rendering clips for me, but I can’t get it to recognize the Dongle. the computer seems to “know” about the dongle, but when I launch LW, it sez “Discovery” edition.

At somebody’s suggestion, we installed Sentinal Protection, but that made no diff; LW still launches in Discovery. Yes, the dongle is attached and the little green light is glowing.

I am not knowledgeable about PCs, and my wife isn’t knowledgeable about LW or about this dongle/sentinal business.

Any suggestion to set things right?

thanks!

Have you tried updating the driver for the dongle? There are a lot of threads about this on newteks site, so it might be worth a search.

the mac and pc dongles that are shipped when we bought them are os specific, but mark at the shop here has a duo dongle. he’s out of town so i can’t ask - but he just contacted newtek for it.

I am a MAC lw user too. There is another step when installing on PC’s that is different from Macs. You have to run a little program that came with LW to generate the license file. Under Start>Newtek>Lightwave 3d 9.2> or something like that. It’s called … um i forget license something or other. I don’t have my laptop with me so i can’t look. But once you run it, it will show your dongle lock ID on top and a place to put in your ‘License Key’. Let that little program generate your license file, if you just try to plop it in there can name it license.key like on the mac it won’t work.

that may not be what you are stuck on, but it had me stumped for like 20 mins one day… :wink:

i had this problem when i borowed a computer. it was fixed by a motherboard patch for the USB drivers.

When the USB dongle for the Mac first came out it was a Mac-only dongle in the same way that the parallel port dongle was PC-only. If it has Eve3 marked on the side of it, then it’s Mac-only and can’t be used on a PC as well and you’ll need to upgrade it to a duo dongle.

well, I thank you for that most useful information…

as it turns out, my dongle does not say “Eve3” on the side, which is good to know that running LW on the wife’s machine is possible with the dongle I have.

guess the next step is to look for that little program which creates the Licence key and see where that leads…hopefully to a successful dongle recognition!

Next step then. Do you have LightWave v9? If you do, just visit your account and ask for a license.key for a Windows PC. Here’s how:

  1. Login to the Registration system at http://register.newtek.com;
  2. Go to My Products;
  3. Copy the LightWave v9 serial number from there;
  4. Go back to My Home and register a new LightWave 3D;
  5. Paste the serial number you copied and you will be presented with a page where the licence you already registered is filled in, but there are empty cases for the other two platforms. Make sure you verify that the dongle number is correct for the platform you are registering.

If you have a previous version, then you will need to contact customer services at NewTek to get a new license.key generated.
