Could be that I totally misunderstand you,
but aren’t you looking for the “Rectangle Selection Tool”?
For objects you activate it by pressing F7, for components you use
“T” for Rectangle Point mode or “Y” for Rectangle Polygon mode,
provided you use the “Softimage interaction model”.
.
Read all about it here:

xsidocs:
Scene Elements > Selecting > Using Selection Tools > Rectangle Selection Tool
Scene Elements > Selecting > Selecting Components > Component Selection Modes

To get the results you want, you may have to look into the “Selection Preferences” as well:

xsidocs:
Preference Reference > Tool Preferences > Selection Preferences > Rectangle Select Options

XSI has this selection outline by default (blue, continuous outline). If you don’t see the selection rectangle there might be some problem with your (old?) graphics card driver.
