Selecting invisible vertices

Hi everyone

with the risk of anoying you, i ,as an absolute newcomer to blender 2.59, have some trouble selecting invisible polygons and vertices.
The border box, the paint selection tool and also the lasso always select the faces visible in the viewer but not the ones that are at the back of my character.
I am using an ordinary apple-mouse.
Are there any tool-attributes or is there a keyboard shortcut?
