Seeking portfolio review/critique

#1

Hey everyone, my name is Mark Williams and I’m trying to put together a Character/Creature concept artist portfolio using 2D and 3D software and would like to know what needs to be done and whether I have the appropriate images included. Here are some images I’ve put together for my portfolio. >

Thanks for taking the time to review and critique my work.

I don’t know if the images not showing up in your post are simply the same ones in your Portfolio, but I’ll assume they are.

If I was hiring concept artists right now as an art director, I would prefer to see all original designs. Those Star Wars variations are all based on existing designs, and I don’t think they’re too helpful, because most decent designers can do variations upon an existing design, since the bulk of the hard work was already done by someone else. It is always easier to create variations on someone else’s strong work, which is why I would prefer not to see those. Instead, I want to see really creative and interesting original designs.

Some of your painted 2D concepts show weakness in how your render forms and surface properties, and some issues with figure. There’s an inconsistency in quality, and that’s not good. It makes me wonder if your stronger works are all referenced while your weaker works are stuff you did out of your head. Your portfolio is generally only as good as your weakest work, so don’t put in anything that will drag down the rest of your portfolio.

I think the quality of your work is great, and I’m not massively into character/creature conceptual work but I have to agree with Lunatique. There seems to be a inconsistency i.e the Darth Vader work is amazing but compared to your own concepts, your work seems to be a little weaker.

Hope this helps, other than that, great stuff
