edit Just wanted to mention… I would assume that most people looking at images in this topic are gonna be prepared for the worst… but just incase, be warned that theres some pretty graphic stuff in the above link…
I would definitely say Giger. Also look at the surrealist artists like Dali and Magritte. Also have a look at Hieronymous Bosch. Heres one of his works: Hell http://www.artchive.com/artchive/b/bosch/delightr.jpg
Ivan Albright.
If you have a chance, go to the Art Institute of Chicago and see his work. He was a medical illustrator during the first World War and apparently saw some things he could not let go, which stuck with his work. He used combinations of very dark and very bright colors and when you see his paintings up close there is an almost psychotic attention to detail in them. You look at his paintings and get a feeling he was really disturbed by something and vented it with a paint brush. You can find pictures of his work online, but looking at even high res photos does them zero justice. The first time I saw his work was like 20 years ago and it made a huge impression on me. He clearly wasn’t doing this work for anyone but himself, and you get the impression that he really needed to do it. His subject matter isn’t gory, or shocking or full of meaningless symbolism, just disturbing when you try to envision the mindset of a person who paints the way he did.

Keep em coming! this thread is surely in one of my favourite links!
here’s a few more…
dave mckean, also known as the guy who made all those really cool “sandman” covers
the brothers quay, animators
http://www.zeitgeistfilms.com/directors/tbrothers/
jan svankmajer, artist (he dislikes being classified as an animator)
http://www.illumin.co.uk/svank/
john jude palencar, artist/illustrator
http://home.att.net/~shadowlandhome/palencar_frame.html
scott radke, maker of incredible marionettes
umm… why? I mean, sure, his work can be pretty macabre and grotesque… but, at least I think, that it can be really beautiful and dreamy at the same time. His work is easily the most creative stuff I have ever seen
I am aware though of the possible offending nature of the work though, and due to Cgtalk’s policy on that sorta stuff, if a mod wants to delete that link, then thats cool
Do a google search for surrealism http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=surrealism
Of surrealist, Dali is probably most well known… http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=dali Dali hung out with a lot of artsy freinds and not so artsy friends and acted weird a lot… but I think that a lot of it was pretend craziness…
another slightly crazy artist that did less surreal stuff, but still was a little out there was Andy Warhol… that guy was a massive manic depressive that was in depressive mode a lot if you read a lot of his writings and interviews…
Hieronymus Bosch is one of the weirdest artists from the medieval days… his work is probably the first stuff that could officially be called surrealist painting even though he was painting for a reason - depicting hell…
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=Bosch%2C+Hieronymus&btnG=Search
There’s a lot of other weird stuff out there… MC Eschers stuff could even be considered weird though all he did was create illusions that would be impossible to exist in real life…
