how do I double the layer’s duration ?
and, can I also do so to a comp ?

Depending on the layer:

Solids and Images can be extended by dragging the end of a layer in the timeline. (There are more shortcuts that you can look up in the help docs under Keyboard Shortcuts>Layers)

Compositions can be scaled by editing the compositions stretch

Remember that this may reduce the framerate of that clip and cause it to stutter! If I’m stretching a precomp, I will increase the framerate of the precomp suitably to avoid that issue.

For stretching out compositions, video clips or image sequences, you may have better results with one of the following:
Time remapping,
The Timewarp effect (Effect>Time)
