save a part of a mesh

#1

hello.

i used c4d in the past and wanted to change to maya. its great. i want to export a part of a body, the head to work on it in softimage facerobot and import it back via pointOven. it works great if i separate the head. but can i also just choose the head polygons and save them aspart of the mesh, export it and import the animation on this part again? in c4d it was very easy to save diffrent points or polygons and stuff.

thank you!

hm. is it working with mesh > extract ? or is there a better solution?maybe this is it?

Really easy fix, extract the geometry that you need or duplicate the mesh and delete the faces you don’t want. You’ll use this as a wrap deformer or influence object for the original mesh at the end but first export it out to Face Robot, do what needs to be done and bring it back into Maya and use it as a wrap or influence object (make sure use components are turned on). From here you should be all set skin the original at 100 percent to the Face Robot mesh as needed.

This has worked for me in the past, there is another method which makes you able to extract the object and keeps the vertices numbering correct so you can insert it back into the original mesh without any issue. I can’t remember the exact way at the moment but it should be in a tutorial on the net.
