Saturation/value triangle causing opacity problems in Corel Painter Essentials 3

#1

I’m probably just being thick, but I can’t seem to find a way of getting opaque colours in Essentials 3. The further I go towards the white end of the triangle, the less opaque the colour gets, and white itself is completely invisible - as if the program is confusing value with opacity. I can get an opaque completely saturated colour, or an opaque black, but anything else is transparent to one extent or another. It works the same whatever brush I use and whatever layer I paint on.

I get a similar effect in Photoshop if the layer mode accidentally gets set to Multiply, but there’s no such option in Essentials. Does anyone know what’s going on?
