Rounder Problem

#1

Hi.

I was trying to round something using LightWave 3D’s “Rounder” function, and it did something really bizarre: it created “starburst” polygon patterns where the corners were. I’m thinking there’s a bug in the program. Am I right? Or is it something else? What can I do about this, anyway?

rounder works differently depending on your selections point, polys edges.

#3

Hmm. So then obviously one has to be careful with it’s use. What causes the symptom that I described, though?

#4

it’s not a problem, it’s a feature…you get different types of ‘rounding’ with either edges or points.

you need edges for the type you seem to be looking for.

#5

It’s a “feature” to create those weird patterns like that? Are you sure? It just doesn’t seem to make any sense why one would want it to do that.

#6

picture tells a thousand words>>

basic box [6 sides]

select 1 point and run rounder>>
select 3 edges for the corner and run rounder

Thank you, but doesn’t really explain the trouble I’m having.

Perhaps a picture showing my situation would help? This is what I am trying to round:

I select the top polygon, try the rounder to round the edges so they’re nice, and then that weird screwup business happens – the corners are jumbled with long “hairs” (long thin polygons) jutting out. To me that seems like a bug , or perhaps the rounder is just not designed to round something this complex, or the geometry is not rounder-friendly, or something…

in the numeric panel for rounder you could try switching to mesh density to low
that usually fixes any ‘‘spikes’’

note always have the numeric panel open -shortcut key is>> n [lower case]

#9

could be that you inset setting is set too high…

#10

It looks like now I managed to get it to work correctly. Selecting only the points of the polygon, not the whole polygon itself, did the trick and the rounding was successful.

#11

ahh good you have a result, so my first answer of ‘what are you using points or poly edges’
did the trick.

cool!

note for future problems it really does help if you post a screen grab of the problem
with the ERROR so we can ‘see’ what’s going on.
